Well this is bad timing.. Seems Steam hacked

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:54 am

Umm. Well this svcks. I just removed my card details, changed my password, and probably won't be buying off steam for a while. I'm a little worried about this tbh. I have steam guard active. They shouldn't ask us to store our card numbers on our accounts if they can't keep them safe.

Just use PayPal, no need to keep your card details on there.

Never leave card details, that's dangerous. Also Steam Guard makes your security strong. Better create an e-mail account just for Steam though. no one needs to know.

Why are hackers ruining the gaming community more and more often nowadays!? a bunch of *swearwords* in my opinion. Somebody should do something about them and try and get them to do stuff that actually helps the gaming community. If the steam database got hacked then i'm guessing that if the hackers want to they could destroy online gaming all together. God life svcks at the moment... But gabe is probably Raging about this. No way would he let hackers ruin his system entirely :3

Just checked. My account is fine, it seems. Will change password nonetheless.
But anyway, I didn't expect Steam to get hacked. Next is Facebook. There you go.

As soon as that happens people will probably stop using internet, and internet will become one huge troll-fest and a hackers lounge.

Well the account I used only usually has enough on it to pay for whatever I want to buy online at that time (usually games), so there's not much they could get off it even if it was hacked. I'm not really worried, but so far it seems fine.

you guys really are taking this too much.If you have steam guard, there is no problem. There is no way they could "guess" that. Each code is different, and it is impossible to guess the right code like that.

Not really, I have a allowance locker on my cards so only the merchants can pull money. Using my card number as a user doesn't work. That's the best uniform prevention. But I don't see the internet going down, just a portion of the purchase power of it.

Lovely, while I managed to change my password and whatnot, it is not letting me remove my card information. Super duper. No mention of this in Steam news, no email notification, nothing, just found out about this here and now.

WTF.

Be more worried about a Phishing attempt on your Steam account than some brute force hack that happened to the forums. Jacking and selling entire Steam accounts on Ebay is something of a cottage industry these days.

Good thing I deleted my credit card info from Steam. Would they be able to still somehow get the CC info even if it were deleted?

Removing a card number now isn't going to help you. They captured data, I very highly doubt they are somehow streaming data.

In any case, I changed all the passwords on my major accounts, even ones that had different passwords. I created several new passwords (I use a stronger password for more important things). I also called and cancelled one of my credit cards I have used on Steam, but mostly because I don't use it anymore. I still have another card I've used on there (my debit card), but I watch that closely.

There's a whole ton of misinformation in this thread:

The only compromise involved users on the Steam forum. If you don't use the forum, there's no chance that your Steam account was compromised (and if you did, you'd have to use the same username or password to be at risk). You may have noticed that you didn't receive any e-mails alerting you to the hack if you don't use the forums.

Speaking of misinformation, here's a key highlight from Valve's announcement;

"We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating."

This is exactly why I have always opted to manually enter my card information and not have it saved on steam.

1. All the data stolen was encrypted...decent encryption isn't terribly easy to decrypt, especially if it's one-way
2. Never have an online vendor store your credit card info in the first place
3. There's no evidence that accounts were compromised
4. Stop making new threads about this, please. There are enough already.

As I stated in another thread, I'm not telling anyone how to react. There's a lot of misinformation going around about this, so I'm just trying to help. Change your Steam password and it's unlikely anything bad will happen, but if you want to rage and lose sleep about it who am I to stand in your way?
