Well this is bad timing.. Seems Steam hacked

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:25 pm

I just logged on steam and got a message that they where compromised. Not best timing considering all the accounts going live tomorrow. Might want go change password and check your account make sure all is well. If this has been posted I apologize and rather be safe than sorry on people knowing.

Not like you can log in on another pc or change anything on steam without verifying it on the email you registered it on.

:read:

To see their message just log off steam and back on.

The Steampowered forums have been offline for days now, allegedly the result of hacking. The Steam client itself is still OK for me though??

My XBL account was compromised and they somehow guessed what the link was in my e-mail, circumventing all the security and they drained my points. Keep a close eye on your Steam accounts and IMMEDIATELY report suspicious activity, including password reset requests that may seem to have been sent 'accidentally.'

Gabe says differently.

Anyways, looks like i'll be keeping tabs on my bank account and Steam account every 6 hours, considering my card information was saved. Hopefully, they figure out if the hackers were able to get passed all the encryption and actually extract information.

From my reading was steam itself.. some personal info was taken, along with some PW and other info. Also stated that would ask for you to change your PW next time you log in. I was just trying give people a heads up something might be up. I know I would like to know if something went down with a place that has my personal info.

Damn thought it was just forums. Expected more from steam then having there database hacked. Lets hope the encryptions are good at least, Getting sick of all the hackers.

What worries me is if they can get to the databases , what's stopping them from eventually hacking client related servers and creating a [censored] storm like no other.

I know it shouldn't have, but this did bring a little smile to my lips.

Mainly cause I got it for the 360 on release, and will get it for the PC once the initial MOD rush is over and the hardcoe modders really start to get to grips with the Construction set and start churning out similar epic MOD's to the ones that graced my PC for Morrowind and Oblivion.

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

THIS IS NOT THE FORUMS. THIS IS STEAM ITSELF. CREDIT CARD INFORMATION AND PASSWORDS.

(sorry about that, but this is really important and we need to make sure people are safe).

Well when it comes to encrypted stuff that is all individually encrypted so it's not a matter of just breaking one encryption, they would have to go through each and every encrypted field for each user so thats years of work probably. Wouldn't worry to much about that, but if they manage to bring the servers the steam client relies on down that would mean steam as a whole would be closed just like psn network was. Think i am gonna enable offline mode as soon as i unlock skyrim just to be on the safe side...

this is a fact of digital life - crap happens. im not too worried about it.

there is no confirmation that the credit card data was taken, or that its encryption has been compromised last i read.

Aye. I frequent the Steam Forums and I've known about the hacking for days. Didn't know it extended into the client. Time to change my password.

I just checked my Steam account, it seems fine to me. So as long as I'm able to play Skyrim tonight, I'm happy.

Awesome. And I can no longer login to my account. Another reason why I HATE services like Steam.

I really wish Steam were not a requirement to unlock and install the game. I ordered through Direct2Drive and still need to use my steam account for the unlock and install. I would rather not have to rely on this sort of thing for this very reason (the ability of hackers to compromise accounts and possibly personal information).

Once again: beware. If they know your e-mail addresses and have established how to 'guess' the password reset link when a request is sent regarding a forgotten password they may be able to directly hijack your Steam account. This happened to me on XBL (different systems, I know) but it illustrates a possible means of intrusion. Watch your e-mail activity carefully and report suspicious Steam-related requests, ESPECIALLY 'accidental' password reset requests.
