Guards know all and see all...

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:33 am

Something that has always bothered me in the elder scrolls: Oblivion and now Skyrim, is the fact that even if you steal a castle load of gold and gear, and get caught stealing "table bread" at the inn, the guards get mad at you and if you choose, you can pay the bounty off... somehow they're aware of ALL the stolen goods... how do they know what was stolen and what was originally yours? Shouldn't they only take away the last thing they caught you stealing? For all they know all the belongings you have on you are yours... as far as they're aware of. T_T today I lost my shoes... which apparently were stolen and I didn't realize it. ANOTHER THING regarding stealing... If I murder someone in their home outside of town... am I really stealing from them anymore? At that point it's just considered murder which has the bounty, then a free estate sale haha. If I somehow snatch the deed to their home (which nobody has), am I still stealing from them?

I feel as if the theft system in the elder scrolls games need to be overseen WAY more than it has been. I always imagined in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion that whenever I stole something, a magical red handprint where I picked it up appeared and all the guards could see it... now it's just the words "Stolen" apparently. ALSO, why can't I sell stolen goods from one town to another? Did they send a messenger ahead of time saying I stole it and the shop keepers shouldn't buy it? For the best RPG I've ever played, it certainly has little tid-bits that bother the heck outa' me...

This has been a rant on the amazing game Elder Scrolls: Skyrim,

You can actually kill witnesses now. That's progress. Let's take it one step at a time.

Post in the more appropriate Skyrim subforum next time, too.

The item was reported stolen and the item you have on you matches the descriptions...idk you want a fair trial by your peers too?? Hahah I kid, I feel the same way sometimes, how about you just dont get caught!

Ironically, in the first 3 Elder Scrolls games, this worked pretty well. In those, if you stole something, and no one saw you, then no one would know except the person you stole it from. So, if you stole a shirt from a shop, you could wear it proudly, or sell it to any other merchant in the world...except the one you stole it from. *sigh* I miss the older games (which is why I just reinstalled Morrowind).

I love how the guards pursue you all the way across Skyrim. Ya, I commited a crime in Solitude, rode all the way to Whiterun, attempted to fast travel when I was close; but, it kept telling me I couldn't because guards were chasing me. Ya, that's some dedication. lol Reminds me of those bears that pop out of nowhere and chase you for miles. Bears don't normally attack people unless provoked; but, they seem pretty ticked off all of the time in Skyrim. Perhaps bears in Skyrim have a steady diet of Nord folk?

Ya, I've noticed when it comes to sequel games, developers tend to take two steps forward and one step back. I had a bad feeling about the next Elder Scrolls game when I saw how they "progressed" Fallout 3 with New Vegas. Blah!

Since someone brought up Morrowind,

The guards were HORRIBLE in Morrowind.

You did something 100,000,000,000,000 miles away and every single guard knew about it instantly. Minority Report indeed.

I like the new way better, and to the OP... do a quick save before stealing or pickpocketing, it will save you the guard shuffle hassle.

Yes, I agree. Just had quite a silly incident like this happen to me.

Was riding down the road on my stolen horse (hehehe) Rode past a couple of soldiers, no problem. They had a little conversation whatever, passed within a few feet of them and so on. DRAGON! Got off the horse. We had an epic battle together, fought and killed the dragon, OK great. Get BACK on horse... "Hey! That's not yours!!!" They "catch" me stealing and add bounty. WTF?! First off EVEN IF they knew it was stolen, why wouldn't they say something while I was riding the horse? Only when I get back on they care? silly, silly, silly...

The guards' UI shows them items in your inventory that don't belong to you in red text.

The psychic guards always bothered me in Oblivion too. I was glad to hear that the crime system would be fixed in Skyrim (killing witnesses, etc), but it's not. I've also tried killing NPCs and the first time I killed a shopkeeper, nobody noticed. I reloaded and a few days later I was showing the game to my brother and killed that same shopkeeper again. This time I got a bounty even though there was nobody else in the shop and then the guards came running in. I reloaded, and sometimes when I kill an NPC the guards come, sometimes they don't. It seems totally random. Then one time I killed all the guards while still in the shop and it said bounty removed, but then when I stepped outside everyone started attacking me. What I don't like is when an unkillable quest character becomes a witness, then you really can't get away.

Still an awesome game though. I just think if they would have fixed the crime it would have been perfect.

Spoiler
That's what spoiler tags are for. Why open a new thread for one question when it could be easily answered in this one that's already open
