It would be nice but if it makes the server (I assume by we you meant the server) essentially unplayable due to lag, then it isn't worth it. Even if the lag isn't super bad, but is still present then I don't think it's worth it IMO.

I might try it on SP though. Looks cool.

Sweet merciful crap. That is undoubtably one of the greatest creations I have ever seen in Minecraft.

sadly, not possible. it would not just lag, the server would flat out crash when trying to generate chunks.

Its only twice as big. I imagine its worth the try just for a day. :)

I mean from when you consider how little memory minecraft uses compared to other modern games, your average server could no doubt handle Minecraft at double it's size.

Just not when it's 2048, because that's 20 times it's normal size :P

its not about memory... well kinda, its about ram. even just doubling the height limit would cause the server to instanly crash when loading new chunks.

unless every wanted to donate a bunch a money monthly to get a server that could run it. but i don't feel like donating an extra $20 upon the 20 i already donate each month... except this month i guess (i haven't even tried to log on, idk if the server has been getting paid for at all.)

It hasn't sadly. I can't afford to put it back up either. Honestly we're best waiting for bone to come back, so that we can get that shiny 16GB server.

I still doesn't hurt to just try it out. Right? :( Maybe its just me but I always like to hope for the best... that's why I always get disappointed though.

You have to remember too that in SMP you could have 10+ people running around at the same time, all generating different areas at twice their normal height.

So I just downloaded Dynamic Height and Better veins for SP. Set it to 2048 and it's taking awhile loading. Nope it crashed :D

Right after installing 64-bit java and letting it generate for a good 20 mins I finally got a 2048 world. It's impressive.

Ah, so you managed to load some sort of world. I set the game to 2048 as an experiment, and upon generating the world my computer made an unholy sound and then rebooted. I have a feeling it was saying to me "Oh [censored] no I'm not even gunna try that".

Minecraft by default is a RAM hog, I'm to fearful to even IMAGINE what a 2048 world is like.

Anything based on java will be a ram hog. Doubly so if it's voxels.

So I decided to finally join in on the fun and bought it today. Played until my first night was over and I'm impressed. I ran into some town at night and dug and basically caused their demise.

Have there been any hints or Tweets or anything by Jeb to suggest when the next patch is coming out and what it might bring? I'd like to see the villages gain some use. I have one nearby my estate and I'd like to get some form of trade or some interaction with them.

Mojang's releasing "snapshot" updates I believe every week or so, showing new features that are being worked on. http://mojang.com/2011/12/08/minecraft-development-snapshot-week-49/, released today.

YES! Didn't they do that before? I was wondering why they took that out, I hate seeing naked, straving sheep everywhere.
