Zero Punctuation's Review of Skyrim

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 10:48 pm

Finish off the Thieves Guild quests, the woman at the end holds 4k not that there is much use for money anyway

And if that's not enough, there's six other fences with 4k each you can unlock.
The "vendor situation" is perfectly fine if you're willing to work a bit for it.

But inaccurate. It's exactly the same as calling Fox News "journalism", which it's not.
We get it, stop being a nit picking nancy. We all love Yahtzee =D

You are obviously not familiar with his work otherwise you would know that there are other games which he likes and that this review actually doesn't prize it too much (remember that he said that the game has a lot of flaws also).
Only game which has no flaws according to him (and I agree on this one) is Portal.
Also, how do you expect him to list all the flaws Skyrim has in just 5 minutes?
It would need 5 hours at least. :P

Actually, I've watched every single ZP ever, and it's quite obvious to me when he "likes" a game. (Read: complaining about it slightly less)

And you're wrong, his favorite game through all his reviews is obviously Painkiller, with Portal a close second.

Though my english is no jewel, most of the time I don't have any trouble understading it.

I was left scratching my head the whole video. Picked a word here, a word there... what was it that he was talking about? A game? Which one?

It's not nit picking, I'm a journalist and can attest first-hand the damage that Fox News and Daily Mail type propagandist organizations can do to people who actually take what they say seriously. It's a serious issue, and I only mean well, and the best way to mitigate such damage is public illumination. That even extends to something as frivolous as recognizing that Yahtzee is a critic. If people seriously thought Yahtzee was an actual reviewer respected for his integrity, noone would actually buy any of the games he made a video about. You may say "well, his reviews aren't serious!" but that's exactly what makes him a critic. Using the right words is far more important than you think.

Wow, that really isn't exactly what I would call a glowing review. It's like he thought it's biggest plus was that it's not like other games coming out right now.

If you watch more of his videos, you will learn he hates every single game, or at least has a LOT negative to say about every game. Ever. Except Portal, and I think he liked Saints Row decently well too.

I think it's probably about the british accent. I can understad (most of) americans talking just fine. Canadians are fine, too. But throw me in front of a british or australian and I will be like "lol WUT"?

From what I gather, the review went better than expected, eh?

He seems to share the same thoughts as me on the game's reception. The archetype of a modern AAA single player game is little more than a 90's FMV game rendered in real time. A big mainstream game released in this day and age that doesn't funnel you down a scripted super-linear hallway is a pretty mind-blowing experience, and people will happily overlook its gamebreaking glitches and balancing issues because of it (myself included). The critical success of Skyrim in spite of its serious issues I think says more about the rest of the industry and how much the bar has been lowered for truly interactive experiences.

His biggest praise was I believe the fact that it's Single Player only and all the better for it.

He is a critic, although he can be a journalist when he's not wearing the ZP hat. Saying that he is usually spot on when it comes to criticisms that he doles out to games.

When you're reviewing a game there are of course facts you can use to back up your claim but mostly it's about appreciation of the art (the entire game as a whole I mean, not just graphics), which is difficult for common journalist types to do.

In fact I prefer reviews from critics, fair and balanced has their place in politics and economics (please!!) but adding humour to the pot of politics and the dish of economics usually falls flat on it's face.

Great episode though - watch a few more to get a feel for his schtick.

His criticisms of games are usually valid, but with his style it's impossible to separate the niggling issues that don't really affect your gaming experience with the major game breaking flaws. He makes a mountain out of a molehill, and he makes the exact same size mountain out of an actual mountain.

I see I'm not the only one who thinks the shops need more cash in.

Upgrade speech, give them 500 more each, then go one more and they all get 1,000 more. Done.
