Changing uGrids = Bad. All those tweakguides suggesting doing that should be deleted for offering incompetent advice.

sorry for the thread diversion but....

Curious about the uGrids to load advice. Why is it bad ? or is it just that it has the potential to be bad given a set of circumstances/load order.

Ive been using uGrids to load =7 throughout Fallout and now Skyrim.

In Skyrim i have essentially zero ctds and not had a quest break or other problem despite running close to 40 mods in my load order, including mods that include scripts such as Frostfall and More complex needs as well as Scenic carriages (extensive nav mesh changes) etc etc. Ive logged well over 300-400 game hours atleast.

Because this game engine has a colorful history of bugs introduced by forcing it to change that setting. Oblivion made it far more obvious in the form of the bouncing landscape bug. Fallout was less obvious about it, but it routinely led to save corruption if it was used for too long. I strongly suspect Skyrim to be the same, but that's all anecdotal evidence at this point from people who tell me they have no problems and are set to the default of 5, vs those who rage on about my borked mods but turn out to have a setting of 7, 9, and one guy even had 11.

With Skyrim it's even worse too because you can't reverse the change without destroying your save. Frankly I don't think Bethesda should continue honoring the ability to change that parameter because all it's ever done is bring misery to the process.

That seems a reasonable conclusion. My thoughts are that anything that pushes the game runs the risk of breaking something and upping the uGrids to load will certainly tax the game heavily. I do think is a combined effect though - of mods, load order, low/high end system and game settings. Basically its all put in the pot and if you have the wrong mix you end up creating napalm. What is or is not the correct mix is open for much speculation and debate.

As a huge supporter of uGrids to load for increased immersion/enjoyment, id be against such a drastic measure. However I do agree that perhaps it shouldnt haven been published in the Nvidia tweak guide as a recommended tweak.

Which is the problem with most of those tweakguides. They're made by people with no familiarity with the game series and the end result is a whole bunch of people who will rail on about "they're nVidia, they know better than you do". It gets quite frustrating to have to contend with that.

I'd be so bold as to say that the vast majority of posts about unstable behavior and CTDs on the PC forum are caused by abuse of tweakguide recommendations.

It makes getting actual verified issues like the https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23navmeshbug fixed difficult.

As stated uGrids is one of the settings I did actually change in the ini file to this time I'll leave it be and see/hope it actually makes a difference. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of it though but the sudden popping up of objects when you get closer to them is kinda horrific.

EDIT:

Ha I said I wasn't gona start again and yet hear I am

To much love for this game..too much

Could someone just clear up for me what the situation is on ESMs supposedly not working properly when it comes to scripts packed in a BSA, is there any truth/proof to that actually being the case?

I don't see how scripts would fail for an ESM+BSA pair. At least not if you're using the current patch. Unless the game simply fails to load the BSA for some reason.

I can tell you for certain though that ESP+BSA packed scripts works just fine.

Ah that's nice to know then, also how about loading saved games while in game, I remember with Oblivion that was a BIG NO NO is it the same with this??

Off topic:

Every time Skyrim launcher opens the it unchecks all my mods and the data option in it is grayed out to, what's the deal with that because it wasn't happening before?

Check the plugins.txt file to see if that changed too. Could be the launcher is lying :)

Nah defo not lying because there unchecked in WB as well and i only knew because I got the message about my save relying on something no longer there which is when I was a bit like " I ain't made no changes". It's fine if I don't open the launcher but sometimes...well a lot of times I forget to launch Steam before I try and fire up Skyrim and that ends up opening the launcher.

This may be caused by BOSS and the Steam Workshop interacting, there is a fix available in the latest boss but it is not on by default, just need to check a box in settings.
