Please help me with the annoying shadow banding! :(

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 9:48 pm

I hate the shadow banding artifacts so much (Breezehome shadow rings, whatever you wanna call it)... a while ago, I remember seeing some screenshots of some users who managed to somehow "hide" the problem somewhat... by making the shadows super blurry or something like that. How do I do that?

I don't care for crisp shadows at all - the shadows can look like a bunch of incoherent blobs for all I care - but the banding... :swear: I'd rather see blurry blobs than horribly pixelated shadows anyway!

Please help. It's the only (and mean ONLY) thing that's bothering me about Skyrim! Everything else is <3

Damn, he posted before me... lol

In that home, the bands are completely unavoidable...

However... Using slower sun motion, and the INI values for blur, you can reduce the damage that the poor shadow code creates. Making the sun jump from position to position, stops the animated banding, but does nothing for bands still seen on some objects.

Look for "blur" in your INI, and other blur values... A value of 4-20 is fine. The higher the value, the slightly more processing power it consumes. But, in that home, they will still be there. It has to do with the poor light setup and that damn invisible mesh, and the cooking-pot stand being over the light.

Thanks... I did iBlurDeferredShadowMask=32 and iShadowMapResolution=1024 seems to make it blurry enough...
