Cheap pc?

Are there any laptops or even desktops under £300, that would be able to run Skyrim. If so which ones?

Pounds not dollars btw. Thanks.

Unlikely unless used and then perhaps only desktops.

Everyone else feel free to do his shopping around for him though, you may find a deal.

Even buying parts seperately, that would be pretty difficult, as you would have to cut a lot of corners.

Have you considered getting a used computer? You can often find older gaming computers for sale on craigslist (or whatever the UK equivalent is). Keep in mind that you can get monitors/keyboards and mice for free from those sites too, so long as you don't mind using a crt monitor.

Go into these deals with both eyes open and make sure the hardware in the box is the same as what is advertised and that it is running BEFORE paying for it. You can get some great deals if you put a little time into it!

Edit: this also means you will have to familiarize yourself with the parts and do some googling before even talking with the sellers.

A Craigslist type site is really your only viable option for that budget. I do know a friend of mine got one hell of a deal on a fairly decent computer, conversely I had to go over and rescue it when he booted it up to find more viruses than a Nigerian prosttute, obviously your experience may differ. My advice, save up for a new pc instead of buying used, it's not like a car that any mechanic can green light, all the previous owner had to do was [censored] up say the thermal paste on the CPU, you go for a slight overclock, and bam, your out a CPU.

In our great uk £300 won't get you much mate. You could maybe try buy & sell or local papers for used PCs that are dual core, and atleast 2 gigs of ram. Then add in a low-med card like a 6770 (£70 ish).

Depending on the power supply, should get you low to medium at playable framerates :)

Edit: Also like the above poster said, make sure you do a fresh OS install when you get it :)

my flatmate just got a Dell XPS 15 - 2.4ghz i5 (boost to 3ghz), 3GB ram, nvidia GT 525m for £400 from their Outlet (i.e. refurbed or scratch n dent stock). It's not arrived yet, but I'm anticipating it running at around medium settings based on my old desktop specs and how that runs Skyrim. (dell.co.uk/outlet)

I've spent many hours searching over the last couple of weeks, and that is the best deal I've found by far for a laptop.

As the posters above said, a desktop may be cheaper - I've just priced up a potential replacement for myself:

AMD FX-4 4100 Black Edition 4 Core 3.6Ghz Socket AM3+ 8MB L3 Cache

Asus M5A78L/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard

Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered

Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU

comes to a total of £230.24 @ebuyer.com - then it's just a matter of choosing a hard drive (~£100 for 2TB, cheaper/smaller options available) and a gfx card that suits your pocket and preference (think I'll go with a GTX 550 ti for < £100, though you should be able to find a cheaper card that plays skyrim fine, as CPU speed is king on this game).

hope this helps,

xTx

You can also try to get some AMD Llano-based setup (A6 or better A8).
It might not give you highest quality settings in Skyrim, but you should be able to run it.
Advantage is that you have CPU and GPU combined at ~100 bucks (total cost is higher of course, you still need mobo, casing, etc.), which might be cheaper overall.
Relative power is lower than for discrete CPU/GPU combos, though.

Edit: In terms of CPU power, Llano isn't much slower than an FX4100, depending on model and application/game even a bit faster sometimes.

Do you have any parts?

My rig runs Skyrim on Ultra+ and cost around £600 but I already owned a power supply, case, screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers/subwoofer etc. If you don't already have all that stuff its unlikely you can put together or buy a high/ultra Skyrim PC for less than £800ish.

The Llano based laptops with it's APU (intergrated gfx) can run this game on Medium/high once you overclock it. They have no issue going upto 3Ghz. That APU is not to be underestimated.
It how is still going over your budget being in the £ 400 to 500 range, since you'll want to make sure you get one with 45w TDP, so any with MX on the end for it's processor ( for example: A8-3510MX ).

So you are kinda out of luck unless you've got useable parts from a previous PC to cut down the costs or you can stretch your budget, that might allow you to build up a PC from parts.

I don't know how old you are, but you say you're still in school so I assume under 18. Perhaps your parents will help you out if you make it a "build it yourself" project over time. Tell them you're interested in I.T. and how computers work etc and want to build one. If you actually read up on it you will get a better price and performance too and maybe they could buy things like the case and screen for you? Also, building a computer will get you into a hobby for life, its very rewarding when you know you made it yourself and you know exactly what all the parts are doing and you got good value for money because of your knowledge and research :)

You could build it a peice at a time over some months even.

Agreed, but overclocking them is a different matter, I assume (but lack the experience) that it's harder than overclocking other processors due to the integrated GPU.
Especially if you don't have much experience yet with oc'ing and are on a tight budget. Although the new BE models come with unlocked multiplier, so at least for them it might be easy once you read up a few guides.
Still, however nice 45W TDP may be, in this case I would still go for the cheaper and somewhat faster normal 100 or 65W desktop parts.

The mobile versions are unlocked from the gpu I think.
