Enchanting confuses me...

Hi,

Likely this has been discussed previously, but with the speed posts drop off the page I'll ask again.

Enchanting, how does it / how is it supposed to work?

I mean, I destroy an item (boots) which has a "Resist Frost" enchant. Now I know "Resist Frost". Great. However I can only apply this enchant to other boots. Ok, I'll destroy an "armour" item with said enchant so I can apply "Resist Frost" to my main torso Armour too. Erm, no. I "Already know that Enchantment".

So, now I've learnt "Resist Frost" and can apply it to boots, can I ever learn to apply it to other clothing items?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but enchanting is basically useless to me. I've learnt lots of enchants by destroying things, yet am only able to basically apply the following things:

"Increased Carry Weight", taken from a pair of light-armour boots, can only be applied to boots and gloves oddly.
"Resist Frost", taken from a pair of boots, can only be applied to boots.
"Resist Fire" ditto.
"Magicka Regen" and "Fortify Magicka" can only be applied to my main torso armour.

All I'm trying to do, now I've made myself some Legendary Dragonscale armour, is to fortify the Ice (Nord, not so important) Fire and Electrical resistances. I've learnt the enchants, but am very limited how I apply them.

I'm on the v1.1 day-one patch version of the game.

If I'm simply getting the wrong end of the stick here can someone guide me? I've read about people applying crazy enchants to gear to make them basically a god, so I know great things are possible. However, I only have 52 in enchanting, purely from recharging my magic weapons, and thought it might be fun to have a play.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Certain effects are limited to certain armor pieces. Obviously you cant put fire damage on armor and you cant put resistances on weapons. When planning your armor enchants, just stick the item on the enchanter first to see what effects it can have from the list. PS resistance to magic affects all elemental attacks and is easier to use than several individual elemental resistances.

Hi,

Yes, I get that I cannot place weapon (i.e damage) enchants on Armour, that's fairly obvious. However, as I know "Resist Fire/Frost/Shock" learnt from destroying Armour items why can I not apply it as I wish?

I mean, checking now, I can only apply "Resist Fire/Frost/Shock" to Boots, or shields armour-wise. Ok, I can also have one ring and one necklace enchanted too - however I already have pre-enchanted items I'm using.

It just seems very limited. I mean, at my very best, I can enchant 25% resist at the moment (I think) - I've gotten to Level 44 with Sneak, Smithing and Archery at 100 and I wanted to play around with something different. I cannot see why only boots and shields would allow elemental resistances to be applied when it come to armour.

Cheers,

You seem to be on track. As your enchanting level increases, you should have more ability to add "bigger and better" or other types of enchantments.

Hi, so are you saying that as my enchanting level increases I will gain the ability to apply my already learnt Fire/Frost/Shock enchants to items other than Boots, shields rings and necklaces? I was debating creating armour sets, i.e. Fire/Frost/Shock resist just for the fun of it and of course potentially useful in specific scenarios.

Oh another thing, sorta related, I sorta hoped my resistances would get better generally. I mean the "Fire Mages" I come across have a natural resistance to Fire (as you'd expect) yet do not need enchanted items to get this. It could be a combination of your overall magical skill and perks in a given element. I mean, I'd have liked to see perk trees running parallel to the existing ones enabling resistances...

Currently fire hurts me, shock really hurts me whereas Frost (I'm a Nord) is less damaging. I've not really dabbled too much in magic so far, maybe I'm missing things.

Thanks, just what I need - reading now!

Still wish I could enchant anything though! :)
