Steam Workshop vs. Nexus Mod Manager

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 10:03 pm

My motherboard went to hell one day before the launch of CK, Workshop and texture DLC and only today I got everything back on track. I have a bunch of mods installed with NMM and doing a quick browse through the new Workshop I found out none of them are available there.

Are the mods in the Workshop better than the ones in NMM? Can I use both?

Is the new texture DLC any better than the textures mods out there? I'm using Serious HD Retexture btw.

Slash sigh. The Nexus and Workshop are two completely different services. They each do pretty much the same thing: host mods.

Now, a couple points:

1) This really should be in the mod board
2) This very thread has been made like a gazillion times over the past 2 months or so and never ends well

I would be surprised if anyone who has experience with mods would choose Workshop. Also at least one moder in the top 5 mods on nexus flat out said that he will never upload his mods to the workshop.

There's no reason you have to choose one or the other.

Nexus has a extremely dedicated following from the community and the modders.
They have been there to support mods for many games for years, without any restrictions (within reason).
So you'll find it nexus coming up top nearly every time when it comes to mods of any type.

The workshop isn't a bad alternative, just the weaker competitor due to self-imposed limitations.
The quality of the mods is too early to tell. However early reports didn't bode well for the workshop.
Typically the community has always sorted that out for themselves, now that Steam/Beth wants in on it, it doesn't mean they will get it.

There is a comparison of Nexus and the Steam Workshop by GopherVids on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/GophersVids#p/u/1/eM-PGRodvFw. To my mind it is clear and balanced.

Hope that helps.

Nexus:
+ image section
+ much better mod manager (although still not perfect and has too few features)
+ tracking system
+ good search system
+ better legal agreement than with Workshop for modders (your copyright fully + no fee possibility)

Nexus:
- very strange/bad moderators that can ban you without warning for politely asking why other people like a specific mod (happened to me)
- too much anime, porm, skimpy related mods uploaded
- too much anime, porm, skimpy images everywhere

Workshop:
+ has more people visiting than Nexus and is more popular
+ no very strange/bad moderators that I know of
+ not much anime, porm, skimpy related mods uploaded

Workshop:
- no tracking system
- no search system at all
- no image section
- too many pointless house and mini mods in my opinion
- worse legal agreement for modders (no full copyright + fee possibility)
- bad mod manager, if you can even call it that
- I keep logging out of the online Steamworks pages all the time for some reason
- automatic installation breaks the installation of more complicated mods with different options and folder structure.
- must have .esp file
- unsubscribing mod does not delete the files

Conclusion: I choose Nexus.

i tried just browsing thr workshop 1 day and got frustrated after 5 mins of trying to find anything descent, to me its not user friendly

nexus on the other hand i can find what want within seconds, its very user friendly imo, and has a better layout in general

in the end of the day you want something that'll make getting mods easy and getting the info and user rating of that mod easy

to me nexus wins everytime

i find the NMM works great is easy to download mods and keep track of mods

it could have a few more functions that FOMM had but maybe they will come

if it aint broke, dont fix it

and ive never had a problem using nexus so i have no reason to change

nexus has had 10 years of experience delivering mods to the community, SW is 10 years behind!

maybe a little bias as i like nexus
but if i honestly thought SW was better i would use it, but i dont.

Thank you for that link! I only began modding with FNV and use only a few so this information was very educational for me. I had come to the same conclusion about the two systems. I think the Steam Workshop is a great place for beginning modders to get a taste and feel for what it's about (not only for begiinners tho) and as they learn more, they can find additional material on Nexus.

I started on Nexus and didn't find it complicated but it took a little time to learn to use the mod manager for FNV...very glad I did. I'm still only a basic user but learning more all the time and there are lots of people on Nexus to help you too. I don't see the two systems as being in competition with each other. I think they can very much complement each other and help the modding community grow to be even stronger as more people are introduced to modding. It's a win/win as far as I'm concerned...the more talent, the better and there are very talented people creating mods. :tes:

Ive been using Workshop and Nexus to get mods, but I use Wrye to manage my mods :D

One thing I didnt like about using Steam to browse mods was no window tabs like a browser, but you can use a website version instead: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?appid=72850

Waaay better than using the Steam interface IMO.

I think that's a subscription cap of 50 mods. That doesn't change the Skyrim mod cap of 250 or so mods.

I really wish the hate for steam workshop would just end. Most of the complaints about it, or even Steam in general, are just hypothetical scenarios or lack any grounds.

Workshop:
- no search system at all
- no image section
- too many pointless house and mini mods in my opinion
- worse legal agreement for modders (no full copyright + fee possibility)
- bad mod manager, if you can even call it that
- I keep logging out of the online Steamworks pages all the time for some reason
- automatic installation breaks the installation of more complicated mods with different options and folder structure.
- must have .esp file
- unsubscribing mod does not delete the files

- Yes, there is a search system. It is on the right side of the page.
- It does have a section for the author to upload images.
- Nexus has its share of pointless mods too.
- You have to keep in mind that the Steam workshop agreement was written for TF2 player-made items. As for the no full copyright, Minecraft has this possibility too so that if a modder makes a feature before they do, they can still implement it. And last time I checked, nobody was complaining about that. Also, didn't the creation kit EULA state that you don't fully own copyright to stuff you create with it in the first place? We should be grateful that we actually GET a creation kit, since most games don't have easy to use modding tools like it.
- I agree that it could use some work. It's supposed to be simple, though.
- Your problem.
- Never had that problem, don't know what you are talking about. Are you sure Workshop is to blame?
- It's a limitation. They aren't exactly ready for people to start uploading their own custom 20GB 4096 by 4096 complete retextures of the game quite yet. You can do plenty with just an ESP though.
- It disables the mod. If this is a problem, hard drive prices have gone down quite a bit since that tsunami that wiped out the factories and warehouses. You can buy a 2TB drive for $120, which is dirt cheap.

And since Nexus lovers will probably listen to Dark0ne, let me quote a news post:

While I don't want to put a downer on the festivities, I wanted to put up a quick cautionary news post about our rules and the concept of respect, because I know everyone is really excited now and might do some dumb things they later regret.

First of all the Creation Kit is property of Bethesda and they can choose to put any DRM or protective measures they want in to their software. Similarly, like the mod authors, it is their right to decide how and where they distribute the software. The Creation Kit is only available through Steam at this time and until Bethesda tell us otherwise please do not try to circumvent that and upload the Creation Kit here. As much as we'd love to host it, we're not allowed to, and I'm afraid if you upload it here you will have your files removed and your account banned. The Creation Kit is only available to people who have actually bought the game, and we do ban admitted pirates here, so be careful what you say.

I fully pride myself on the respect we give to mod authors and their right to choose how and where their mods get distributed. It's something we've championed for 10 years now and we're not going to stop. Some mod authors are going to choose to be exclusive to one site (which is never a good idea, and I've said as much plenty of times!) while others will spread their files across Steam Workshop, the Nexus, PES and others. How and where mod authors host their files is their decision, and not yours, so if you see a mod on Steam Workshop that isn't on the Nexus you do not have a right to upload that mod to the Nexus without the author's express written permission. And vice versa from Nexus to Steam Workshop. Please remember that, because mod authors spend a hell of a lot of time releasing these mods for people to enjoy, so don't upset them by going against their wishes.

As for us, we're still busy working away. Getting the Creation Kit is great, and we'll see over the coming months how the Steam Workshop integration pans out. It's too soon to tell how it will affect things! When the dust has settled I'll do another video blog to share my thoughts on the events that have happened within the community, including what we're up to as well as the Creation Kit and Steam Workshop.

Happy modding folks.

Just stop with all the hate for one side or the other so the mod users can stop worrying about this pointless flame war. I can tell you already that I am tired of hearing it.
