Lack of useful items

Has anybody else noticed that Skyrim has a definite lack of useful items that can be obtained through quests? It seems like Skyrim has very few unique items, and the unique items the game does have are fairly useless. Comparing the lists of total unique items to Oblivion:

Skyrim does have way fewer unique items than Oblivion. While Oblivion's artifacts tended to be some of the strongest weapons in the game, Skyrim's artifacts are kind of pathetic. Take a look at Dawnbreaker for example, which happens to be the only sword artifact in the game. It does 2 less damage than a Daedric Sword, which isn't that bad, but it can only be improved to flawless, making the upgraded damage output a bit lackluster. Also, its enchantment gives a measly 10 extra fire damage, and the unique explosion effect doesn't really do much.

Why is it that any character with moderate smithing and enchanting skills can craft a weapon that is leagues more powerful than some of the most legendary items in TES lore? It's really disappointing that most artifacts are really a bit pathetic in terms of usefulness.

Maybe to encourage you to smith...or figured people would be doing so. But it's silly to watch blacksmiths making steel sword after steel sword while I'm upgrading my dwarven to flawless and making elven whatnots...I'm like, no, you're clearly not the best Blacksmith in Tamriel. I agree.

Sure, the stuff isn't necessarily end-game loot, but it would be a little overpowered it if was and you could get it at level 20. I have the Archmage Robes, Morokei, and a staff of Chain Lightning at level 25, and I'm basically the Apocalypse. I can't imagine if the loot was better than what it was. Some of this stuff is probably mid 40s loot.

Ebony blade is also a sword.

Though I agree the artifacts are a bit dissapointing. I think more thought went into the quests though. I'm really enjoying them.
