Try to always make hard saves as often as you can. When it comes to huge open-world RPG games like the Elder Scrolls or Fallout series, you'll come to love yourself for having a save right at a perfect time in which you can revert back to and get yourself out of some sticky situations.
In fact, I just patted myself on the back earlier today for having a save right before entering the last room in some dungeon. After killing a tough Draugr named Mikrul for the Forbidden Legend I quest, I wasn't able to search the body and get the necessary item to move on in the quest. I would have been stuck and had to move on with out getting the item and hope on the slight chance Bethesda would someday fix this particular problem and I could go back and be lucky enough to find the body still there, item and all. Figured I would load up the previous save and give killing 'ole Mikrul another try and see what happens. A couple slashes with my sowrd and a few arrows later the baddie hit the ground and I was able to get my item from him, Checked around for anymore priceless goodies and I was out of there. This is just an example of where saving often comes in handy.
