Shouts. What do YOU think of them?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:40 pm

I dont like the concept. They should have been mage spells. It almost makes every class you make a hybrid caster. I was ok with a few of them, but the time slow down and storm calll and so forth should have just been mage spells.

I'm with you on that, at least for my main, as it's really not part of my characters concept.I have no issues with the voice throw as it seems far less magical as opposed to the use of actual sound from a shout.

Breathing fire or freezing people just doesn't fit.

Pretty sure I'll use them more on my alt but that's a mage so it feels far more in character which is a large part of any TES game for me.

Aura Whisper is great for sneaking.
Slow Time is great for getting more hits in and dodging magic attacks.
Unrelenting Force is just great for everything.
...and so on, I find good uses for each shout in different situations, though some recharge times are ridiculous.

I find most of them pretty useless and boring. Except for Unrelentless Force which I really like. But I do NOT want to go through my 3rd play though doing the 1st quest and some of the main quest just to get this again. No way!!!
You only find a few usefull, because there is GREAT variation. I think they did a great job with the shouts, to the point where you don't use all of them all the time, but for every character type there is at least 1 or 2 usefull ones. Different people use different shouts. Everyone finds some useless and some usefull. This is great variation.

I like them. I mostly use Ice Form and Fire Breath, but Unrelenting Force and Become Ethereal are good as well. Whirlwind Sprint for quick travel/bridging gaps.

The 'Throw Voice' shout is one of the few I actually use, since it goes very well with my sneak-combat style. If I find some of the attack ones at lower levels they do get some use, but at higher levels I tend to ignore them since my weapons do ridiculous amounts of damage.

The fact they all share the same cool-down timer I find rather annoying, as it means I can't swap to another shout while the first one is cooling down; the fact that some of said timers are 3-5 minutes long doesn't help, since those shouts are the ones I would most want to rotate between. I had hoped I would be able to base a character on using them, but that's not going to be practical unless I either massively reduce the timers or somehow separate them by shout.

I think they are awesome, varied and adds a lot to the game. I have been hoping to use the Thu'um since I read the Children of the Sky.

One of the reasons the Draugr are my favorite type of enemy is that the stronger ones can use the Thu'um, often making for more interresting battles(at least with the unique ones and Death Overlords who use anything from frost breath to disarm to unrelenting force).

Aura Whisper, used about 100 times. After that, I think frost breath three times. ;p

Some of them are absurdly overpoweredly brokenly powerful. Like Elemental Fury? It lets me kill giants 20 levels before I could otherwise. And Slow Time? Picture this: walking along, suddenly see a room ahead. Aura whisper it...hmm, there are 6 forsworn up there. And a briarheart. I'm screwed. But Wait! I have this sweet Slow Time shout! Use a level 2 slow time shout, hit berserker rage, and sprint into the room; by the time they have their weapons drawn, the briarheart and 2 of the others are dead. By the time they've turned to face me, one of the forsworn is coming back to life on my side, and by the time Slow Time ends, I'm behind one of them, beating away. What would otherwise have been an impossible fight is suddenly a cake-walk.

THAT is how powerful they are. Or look at storm call? Again, run into an exterior fort of Forsworn, use the level 3 storm shout, and by the time i kill 2 of them myself the rest have died from high voltage.

Dragon shouts are insane and awesome.

Besides Dragonrend they are worthless and that's just to fight those pesky dragons. All you need is high magic resist and they are easy. Though I suppose the storm and frost is entertaining. Fade one can be somewhat practical.

Novelties... nothing I couldn't do without, but fun to play with from time to time. I like using firebreath to set pools of oil on fire.

There is at least one area that could not be reached without Whirlwind Sprint. I can't remember the dungeon. I actually flew across the gap to get to the other side and got a 2H Glass sword as a reward. I think there are intentional uses, you just have to be aware.

Fire Breath, Frost Breath and Ice Form are seriously underpowered. They should actually, I don't know... Do decent damage? Make enemies catch fire, in the former's case?

Storm Call's friendly firing is also an issue too. I literally never use it because of that, it keeps killing my followers. I do have a follower-less character I'm just starting though, I'll probably use it with her.

It's frustrating that Disarm apparently works on you no matter your level, but like half of all bandits are too powerful for you to use it on them :/

The others can be cool, though. Become Ethereal and Marked for Death, especially.

I like the dragon shouts. That siad I found that they made magic spells (in particular the destruction school) "feel" redundant and not really needed. It's like you can create a better "spellsword" or "warmage" type character without ever really investing in the magic school perks by killing dragons and learning shouts and thanks to the UI it's easier to use them without breaking the flow of combat.

There are way too many different shouts. There should only have been a couple, maybe three. If you want more magical effects than that, go learn some magic. I think it was a neat idea, but more appropriate for an action/adventure game with a sword slinging character. It gives a lot of magic to non-magicians.

Dunno, Dragonrend is nice, but calling Odahviing during a Dragon fight is a lot more fun to watch. I also use Aura Whisper a lot, and Whirlwind Sprint is awesome to leap across chasms.

Most of them are not at all related to the magic schools, though, or are worse. Aura Whisper, for example; it shows where things are, but not if they're friendly or not, or other stuff that detect life/dead does. Fire Breath does far less damage than even a destro mage can do, and the list goes on. Magic can do what thu'um can do, except more and better.

I'm glad they're so forgettable. I prefer to play "straight" warrior, thief, mage type characters. Would svck if every character became Superman with heat vision and flying, with their actual skills not mattering.

Some of the shouts are good, some are not, the thing that erks me is that some of them have way too long reuse timers on them for what they do. Fire and Ice breath don't really seem to do all that significant damage and yet take almost as long as unrelenting force or slow time to recharge which are much more helpful.

I do like the fact that they can fit into the 3 major classes quite well, throw voice works well with stealth for example and unrelenting force works well with all types of combat. Slow time also works well since it gives you a massive advantage, you can literally walk behind an Enemy and Power attack them from behind with slow time or if you're ranged then your targets are moving slower and thus easier to aim at.

I love the shouts but the recharge times can get annoying.

They sould have put some kind of XP thing for shouts so if you use a particular shout a lot the it would get more powerful and less recharge time

There are some very cool ones:
- the one you get first (dunno, how it's called in english)
- the ice form shout (to freeze enemies)
- the slowdown time shout
- the whirlwind shout
- etheral shout

From the ones I've found, those were cool imo.
The other ones were "ok" to utterly useless.

Marked for death, Ice form, Slow time, become etheral, and throw voice are easily the best.

I like them quite a bit. When playing as my Imperial, they really make me feel like a muh-[censored]in' Dragon Born. They feel tremendously powerful.
