Shouts. What do YOU think of them?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:59 pm

I find most of them pretty useless and boring. Except for Unrelentless Force which I really like. But I do NOT want to go through my 3rd play though doing the 1st quest and some of the main quest just to get this again. No way!!!

The become ethereal shout is nice, you can jump of a mountain and not die. Slow time is also useful, as you don't slow as much as the enemy.

I like them but for me they are a get out of jail card only and rarely used, the exception being voice throwing.

That one shout rocks my sneak archers world.

"I thought I heard....."

I use shouts often on my Orc, occasionally on my Bosmer, and my other characters never got them, or never use them because they only have Fus.

Fire Breath, Frost Breath, Become Ethereal, Unrelenting Force, Elemental Fury, and Whirlwind Sprint. So many useful shouts.

Novelties... nothing I couldn't do without, but fun to play with from time to time. I like using firebreath to set pools of oil on fire.

Unrelenting Force should be in every game from now on. Other than that, the only opinion I have about them is that it's convenient having a third "magic" button.

At one point in the game, I stopped using them altogether.

I dont like the concept. They should have been mage spells. It almost makes every class you make a hybrid caster. I was ok with a few of them, but the time slow down and storm calll and so forth should have just been mage spells.

Storm Call level 1 and 2 are almost not worth it when comparing their recast timer to effectiveness. I havn't gotten level 3 yet, but I'm hoping it will actually behave like it did in the Teaser trailers before release. Level 1 and 2 don't even hit the dragons.

Aura Whisper is awesome even at level 1 (I am not even unlocking level 2 because the first is so effective)

Unrelenting Force is obviously a winner. (except when Drauger spam the level 3 version; they don't have recast timers, because one of them hit me five times in a row within 30 seconds; that is obviously poor game design)

Become Ethereal is useful for jumping down cliffs and mountains. I did use it once to evade some powerful enemies by jumping off a cliff.

Whirlwind Sprint is very useful. I have made use of it for evasion and charging a ranged enemy.

What bothers me about Elemental Fury is that it doesn't work on Bound Swords. The bound swords are not enchanted, but the game still classifies them as such. I suppose they did that because certain perks for bound weapons can add enchantment-like effects.

I never remember to use them. Meh. I'd trade them all for a 3rd hot-key (I'm on 360). Yes Bethesda, your interface design is THAT bad.

Become Ethereal is useful for a melee character when fighting archers. You can close to melee range while their arrows pass right through you.

They seem gimmicky to me, and I rarely use them. I prefer classic melee and magic combat, without any extra fuss (I also tend to neglect racial powers).

As a sneaky archer, Aura Whisper is very useful to locate enemies, so I use that very often. Other than that, I have to say I don't really use any other shouts because the one I have are all combat-oriented and my enemies rarely come close enough to use them. And if they do, I forget to use them.
I have about 5 dragon souls atm and wouldn't now what to spend them on...

I love 'em. I hope there's a similar (but different in a lore-friendly way) mechanic in TES VI.

They're extremely useful; some of them have a lot more uses than the short description can give you an idea of (such as become ethereal).

...of course, I always forget they exist.

IDK pretty cool. Nice for warrior classes who don't invest in magic.

After I adjusted the cooldown time shouts are a far more viable option now. I love 'em and I doubt I could ever make a character that doesn't incorporate shouting into his fighting style.

In the next game, shouting should be a skill, like destruction.

I'll leave it at that...

Indeed. Aura Whisper is by far my most used should for my Archer/Warrior build.

I love the whole concept. We got several new magic systems with the game:
* Shouts - separate "power source" from the magicka deal.
* Charge time - requires a little more planning. Seen this in old dice games too.
* Runes - completely new concept to the game as far as player casting goes.
* Dual cast - also something new, which "feels" better mechanically than number trickery.

So loss of spell making doesn't bother me at all.

I like the shouts because it uses completely different mechanics than magic. It's verbal rather than gesticulative (?). It's based on cooldown that is out of your control (normal magic shouldn't have magicka regen at all, old school style). And gaining access to this kind of "magic" you don't have to be a "mage" or anything remotely similar. At lvl 53 most of my magic skills (other than restoration) are in the 15-20 range, and the shouts I use connect quite nicely with the skills I'm actually focusing on. It has never happened to me before that I was able to neglect magic to that degree. And I love it.
