A little advice...

Wow, thanks for all the replies, very helpful. So there aren't any quests which are collect X amount of this flower?

Here are some quests for ingredients and other items you'll run into:

10 Fire Salts
10 Frost Salts
5 Ice Wraith Teeth
20 Nightshaid
20 Deathbell
20 Nirnroot
20 Jazbay Graqes
10 bear pelts (any kind)
2 Flawless Sapphires
1 Mammoth Tusk
1 Mamoth Tusk (there are two quests that ask for one)
1 gold ore
3 Flawless Amethysts
1 Daedra Heart
1 Daedra Heart (again, two quests)
1 Troll Fat

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I make sure to collect these when I make a new character and have them on my so save a lot of time.

Once again...thanks for all the advice.

I have one more question (I think). Should I keep books that I have read? Including the ones that give you something?

Just started this beast of a game, I have a few questions though..

I have been collecting pretty much everything I can, I have read somewhere that it is best to keep items for future quests etc. So can anyone tell me specifics that should be kept? Or somewhere I can store my items?

You can't drop quest items.
As for storage...

I suggest an uninhabited place thathas a chest and is within reach, or buying the house in Whiterun.

...Is it possible to buy something to improve my carry weight?

There is also
Spoiler
the Steed Stone, which gives you +100 carry weight and also removes the encumbrance of your armour ... not sure if this is a spoiler, but writing it here just in case! The Steed Stone is west of Solitude

Ok another question. In one of my next missions I think I will be going to battle Whiterun, only thing is I purchased a house there. Will I lose the house (and possessions)?

For good storage you can get right off the bat, join the Mage College in Winterhold. You get a free room with 8 or 9 storage containers all right close to each other - very handy for sorting your stuff (eg smithing, alchemy, enchantables, loot for selling, junk for hoarding, etc).

don't use the barrels. lost a ebony sword that way. the barrels reset every two in-game weeks, but the wardrobes never reset.

I try to keep flawless gems (you'll need some for various quests), a gold ore, a couple of mammoth tusks, jazbay graqes, fire salts, frost salts and ice wraith teeth (needed for people in Riften and a couple of other places), nirnroots (also Riften), any bow with someone's name (these won't bug the quests, it's just the musical instruments that are tricky - and you can give them to their owner once you run into them).

You're telling me I shouldn't have sold my flawless diamond?

don't think so, but I did these quests before I got a house (I just use the college room (it's free)). in fact, I don't have a house yet.

BTW, you can have other companions. j'zargo (finish his quest after finishing the saarthal quest, and he'll be your companion upon request.) and faendal (do his little letter quest and he'll be your companion upon request). J'zargo is a mage, and LOVES lightning spells. faendal is an archer. and farkas is a warrior (companions questline)

The Elder Scroll weighs 10 if I recall.

I would advise not picking up the 'named' instruments because both quests regarding them bug out - wait until after the next patch to retrieve them.

The only thing that's really annoying to get, in my opinion, is the flippin Jazbay graqes. And daedra hearts - don't go eating them or using them for potions if you want to make daedric armor. Most other things are relatively plentiful.

NO!!!!!' By picking up random [censored] you can Bug quests! If you ever see something with a unique name DO NOT Take! Ex: Pantea's flute

Luckily the bards college items dont actually weigh anything despite the information on them. If your on pc you can just remove them with the console ^_^

Sheesh... I really, really need to sort my stuff out. L34 now, and I think it's all just stuffed in random chests/closets et al. Gonna be a pain to organise.

Early in the game before you get your speech skills up Potatoes, Carrots, Baskets, Buckets and probably a few other silly items which I cannot now recall are worthless but as your speech skills go up you end up getting gold for them, small amounts mind but still it's MONEY! If I have space to carry and I am heading back near a house I take a lot of this stuff and throw it all in one location so later when I am able I will sell it all at once.

There are lots of items that can up your carry weight. On my first play through I had a pair of boots which gave me 35 and I found another pair which gave me 25. If you learn enchanting you will be able to enchant Items so they can do the same job but I assume you would need to be very high in enchanting to put 25 or 35 on something.

don't get rid of any (dragon?) claws, they are sellable, but open doors in caves for specific quests.

If you like collecting books go ahead and keep them (when you buy and furnish a house you get a bookshelf to store them on so they look nice), but there is no point otherwise.
