I'm in the middle of a pure mage character that doesn't use melee weapons or wear armor. It's quite frustrating at times as it seems like tripping over a rock causes extensive damage. He's easily killed. But it does make things more challenging and causes you to have to consider a wide variety of options in every given situation. That's why I've never played a heavily armored, battle-axe wielding tank; because there isn't much to think about: run forward and attack, block if you need to, drink helath potion.
And it takes a long time to be able to raise a thrall and even the Revenant spell isn't that useful. Yesterday while trying to raise a bandit I got "Bandit Too Powerful For Revenant". WTF?
Raising zombies is highly unreliable. Sometimes they fight for you, sometimes they just wander around while you're engaged with a Draugr Deathlord. But it's also a matter of habit. A lot of times I just forget to raise the dead during combat. Often times though there aren't any dead to raise and when you do raise them in anticipation of a battle they only last for 60 seconds before collapsing into a pile of dust. I guess you could scout ahead, see the bad guys and then go back and raise one and then hurry back to the upcoming battle; but it's a PITA.
