Skyrim Earns $650 million

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:31 pm

You are completely forgetting digital distribution. Even if only 6 or 7 million of the 10 million shipped have sold, that is only retail box sales. The rest of that $650 would be through digital services such as Steam.

Typically in today's market digital PC sales are much higher than box sales. As high as 6:1 digital over box sales.
I didn't forget digital sales, those are included in the 10 million shipped, just like EA's 12 million shipped copies of Battlefield 3 two weeks ago encompassed 8 million copies sold through both physical and digital sales. PC digital sales are often more than physical sales these days, but not by huge amounts. It's unlikely that the total physical/digital PC sales match or exceed those for the 360, which is likely where most of the sales are. The 360 has 3.55 million sales so far, and the PC has 1.26 million physical sales, so another 2.29 million sales in digital would put the PC sales on par with the 360 sales, which would make the total sales across all platforms be 9.12 million. It's unlikely there are that many PC sales though.

Which is starting to get pretty close to your $650 million. That sounds just about right actually.

No, it isn't getting close to $650 million, it's probably around $450 million, with an average price of $50 per copy sold. The actual average could be less.

There's always regions we don't get sales figures from, VGChartz (where I assume you are getting your numbers) probably doesn't try and account for those, and I still think we're selling digital sales short at 2:1.

Of course who knows what all they are counting in that $650 million, in the end its just a number the marketing folks thought sounded good and is probably "close enough". Either way it gives some insight into just how strong the PC sales were versus the console sales.

I'm trying to find where this $650 million figure even comes from. It seems like one article multiplied Bethesda's claim of 10 million shipped by an MSRP and other articles just parroted it.

Indeed, and perhaps next game will use an engine like Frostbite 2 or equivalent. Oooh, makes me drool.

Not gonna happen, the Creation engine will be used for some time to come, with improvements as time goes by of course, we may see a new Beth created engine again when the next generation of consoles  are released.

Hype yes but with the advent of the internet word travels fast when hyped games svck. Look at Dragon Age 2, failed pretty hard in terms of sales compared to the original and it got plenty of hype around the web.
skyrim may of got a lot of hype, but its also a very good game and deserves its almost 10 game rating. its not a game that got hyped and then fell flat like new vegas or alpha protocol. new vegas was like 20 dollars less than 2 months after it came out...i doubt skyrim is gonna be 20 dollars next month...so yeah it got hyped, but its lived up to the hype. apart from the bad patch, i don't have any major complaints on the game, to me its fun and i've prob played it for 150 plus hours so far and not even half way into the main quest.

Am I the only one that thinks they don't deserve it?

As much as I may hate some of the changes they made (Dumbing it down all-around.) the game was still the best damn thing I played in the last two years, so they did deserve it, at least from an enjoyment factor. I know where your coming from though.
