Skyrim Earns $650 million

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:29 am

The MSNBC info is BS, it can't have earned $650 million. If every copy of those 10 million shipped was already sold, and sold for an average of $60, it still would only have earned $600 million. But those 10 million shipped are not all sold, and a lot of the copies were sold for a lot less than $60, enough that the limited number of collector's editions sold could in no way balance it out to make there be an average selling price of $60. The MSNBC clip also says that Skyrim has sold 3 times as many copies as any PC game this year... which is also obviously BS (Battlefield 3, MW3 - both have sold significantly more than Skyrim). Even if every last one of Skyrim's copies sold this year were all sold on the PC, that still wouldn't be true. That clip is simply poor journalism.
I'd guess digital copies are not included in the 10 million figure.

Lets not also forget that dollars are not the only currency that was paid to own the game. You should also factor in sales from other regions and the currency they use and the value of that converted to dollars.

I'd guess digital copies are not included in the 10 million figure.
I believe they include the serial numbers they transfer to Valve and elsewhere for digital resale as copies shipped. The total physical sales for the game are an estimated 6.83 million, with 3.55 million on 360, 2.02 million on PS3, and 1.26 million on PC. The numbers work out if you estimate another 1 million or so in digital sales on the PC, which puts the PC sales in-between the PS3 and 360 sales, and the total number of sales at around 8+ million, which makes sense if they've shipped 10 million. To increase the PC sales numbers in a way that stretches the "10 million shipped" status means that the PC version has significantly outsold the 360 version. And even then, it still doesn't come close to validating the MSNBC report's claim of it selling 3x as much as other PC games this year, as it still wouldn't be the highest selling PC game this year.

hopefully this will stop Beths views of "oh there's way more money to be made on the consoles" and stop consolifying the series to death

Um there's a huge flaw in that logic, that being the game is a huge sucess on PC, so why would they change anything but keep going in the direction they're going. Its obviously working.

Flawed logic. Each TES has sold more than the previous, despite having different directions, so obviously any of those directions is the right direction. Sequels sell more than their predecessors due to the name growing, the available gaming audience growing, and largely because of the marketing budget growing. Star Was Revenge of the Sith made more at the box office than Empire Strikes Back, after adjusting for inflation. Speaks for itself.

Actually the report was not a claim, it was a report. I believe, if you watch it I will be validated, this was a statement that Valve released that they were reporting. I guess Valve would know, considering they own Steam.

As far as units shipped. I guess that wouldn't mean that every unit was sold. But I'm not sure how it all works. It is possible that stores pay for the copies when they get them? I don't know. In any event the game is a huge success, $650 million is a huge number. Perhaps it is less. Nevertheless it still has to be a huge amount.

Depending on what's being referred to by "it," it's a claim and a report. The MSNBC journalist responsible for the report misunderstood the source information and said Skyrim has sold 3x as much as any PC game this year, when the source information meant specifically compared to other sales through Steam. A game like Battlefield 3 has sold more than Skyrim, but isn't available on Steam.

The units shipped is a different figure than units sold. I believe publishers don't get their payout from physical units sold until the end of the fiscal quarter after the item has been sold off the shelf.

(if that is even possible :P)
It is in fact.

Next time they might publish a PC version who have controls aimed at homo sapiens as opposed to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scylla_serrata

I have found it quite challenging. There have been a few times when an enemy has hit me loafs and done like a quater of my health and then killed me with a fluke attack. I have had to tutn it down to apprentice in two dungeons.

According to MSNBC Skyrim has shipped more than 10 million copies of the game so far and has earned over $650 million (yep over a half billion dollars.)

And it is the fastest and best Steam selling game in history, selling, already, more than three times any PC game on the Steam site this year:
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/in-game/45701325/#45701325

ETA:

I believe this means PCs should get more attention, like being able to map keys to the keypad for us south paws, among other things.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Bethesda hasn't shown any interest and I don't think ever will show interest in doing anything but giving the PC Users a crappy PORT that the Modding Community has to fix every time.

Maybe if people were to stop buying the PC version when it's nothing but a PORT than Bethesda would realize that they need to make the PC version better.
