70,924 items stolen, 70,911 items picked

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 2:14 pm

The title of this topic are two numbers I just saw listed under my crime stats, along with a 1000 gold bounty on my head for Winterhold.

The problem here is that these stats are for my lawfully-good Nord Dragonborn, a loyal Stormcloak who has never stolen an item in his life, and certainly never did anything to warrent a 1000 gold bounty in any Hold, much less the one in which I have taken up a permanent residence!

So what gives?

I have 3 murders in my stats and have no idea where 2 of them came from (1 was an accident ). I've only started one character, but I've assumed the stats are for your loaded character. Probably a bug? :P

I just checked mine and I have 12 items stolen (quests most likely - maybe one or two things I picked up hastily while trying to open a container <_<).

you can get a 1000 bounty by just hiting someone by accident even if you don't kill them you still get a 1000 bounty,I was in winterhold college fighting a dragon and one of the mages got in the way and I hit her by accident didn't kill her by I had to pay the college to get back into the college and I had 1000 bounty on my head.

Technically speaking gold is a very large stack of single coins for purposes of the game engine. if you steal 100 coins you will have stolen "100 items". When pickpocketting, every item you steal counts as "stolen" for purposes of your crime stats, irrespective of whether you stole from a good guy or bad guy.

Perhaps that is the reason? - been pickpocketting the bandits and stuff you meet. As for the bounty there is a million and one buggy causes, most often accidental assault or even murder while defending a town froma dragon

I would have, but by the time I noticed there was no telling how far back it happened. :o Plus, as I understand it: even killing a bandit or Forsworn from a distance before they aggro you proper will count as a murder.

Yeah, sometimes the crime "calculator' seems a bit borked. I went to Falkreath for the first time ever, and turns out I had a 40 septim bounty on my head - for what I don't know, I had not even done a lick of questing in the area, Falkreath was my first stop when I decided to ramble through that section of the map.

OK, that area might be bugged then because that was where my first mystery murder and 1K bounty was (to this day I've never been approached by a guard to pay it). :o

I can see how the odd bounty or assault, or even murder might happen and be recorded by the stat tracking.

What concerns me most is the absurd amount of items that the game thinks I have stolen. This char is a full blown warrior! I do not pick pocket my enemies, I charge them with my axe. I do not break into homes and shops, stealing items I do not even need like some kleptomaniac.

My Khajiit thief, who became head of the Thieves Guild, did not even steal that many items in his 46 level career...

What really pisses me off is the assault stat... Ive been getting assaults on anyone and anything from bandits to sabre cats to even dragons.. You believe it? Dragons?!

Ive noticed that some of the dragons just dont want to fight me. But the'll fight everything else. So, to avoid the thing killing all my peoples, i shot an arrow in its eyeball. Now hes hostile... Pffft. Then i check the stats.... Assault = 1... And ive done numerous tests with this, and i gotta say... Getting assaults on enemies is just plain BS.

I love you Bethesda. But c'mon, baby... Please fix...

You guys taking it all too much to heart.

The stats pages are simply a list of events. Within the game engine an "assault" is simply an "unprovoked attack", whether that be hunting a deer, assassinating a warlord or bludgeoning a little old lady in whiterun. A stolen item means any item taken that would anger someone for taking it - pickpocketting items from "bad guys" are still thefts in this regard, and each individual coin counts as one stolen item.

Some games include engine-related stats like "time spent staring at the sky" (Black and White had it ;p), times mouse clicked etc - they're just an intresting statistic and not a guide to your character (perhaps the lack of a karma meter is making people feel lost?) . You wouldn't try and "limit" the time spent staring at the sky, or try avoid clicking the mouse right would you - so why worry about the other stats?

...wait...

...you probably would wouldn't you xD

Sounds like your game glitched out, where it thinks every item you find is stolen, do any items ever show the stolen tag?

Falkreath Hold is where the game actually begins; Helgen is a Falkreath settlement.

I dunno what you did, but... at the "real" starting point (leaving the cave) you're in Falkreath.

Ah. One murder mystery solved: I killed the Jailer/Torturer guy who didn't aggro me on my way out. His title just asked for it.
