Spam muffle. It's the bound sword of alteration. That's my time.

Spamming muffle will increase Illusion, not alteration.

if your playing on Master thats easy. Casting ironflesh&co before the fight is pretty much a necessity. Alteration skyrockets.

Already at 90+ Alteration.

I just sat in the middle of Riften market and spammed Detect life.

But Tolfdir isn't selling higher level spell books for some reason.

Keep courage on followers , muffle on me. Goes up pretty fast (while playing naturally).

Like others have said, just use the hell out of it. My character is constantly spamming ebonyflesh at this point as he did Iron and Oak before. Paralyze is a great equalizer against groups of Falmer and groups of wild animals, and so is soultrap.

Oh look, there's three polar bears, I'm gonna die. Nope. Ebony flesh, paralyze all three; soul trap all three. Cast bound sword, hack the SOBs to death, and in about 60 seconds you have three good souls, pelts for leather making, and bear claws for alchemy. Of course it takes a little re-paralyzing but it's pretty easy.

I'm at level 37 and my Alteration is at around 93 or so right now. It could have happened sooner but I did it all through combat.

What's the Courage spell good for? I've never had a follower run away and unless I kill them accidentally (or murder them at the Shrine of Boethia) they won't die anyway. Seemingly one of the more useless spells in the game. But there's probably something I'm not consdering.

I'm not sure about this, but I was under the impression that getting hit while a protection spell (Oakflesh ect.) is active will level up Alteration. I recall at least two situations when I got hit and got the notification, but I was not casting a spell at that moment, but had one of the protection spells active.

Edit: Courage ect. is probably most helpful if you want to keep enemies from running away for whatever reason. (Annoying to hit them, got them into a fight with someone else by illusion or conjuration ...)

Detect life in the Riften market place at peak hours is the easiest way.

A better question is how to level up restoration quickly, it takes [censored] forever.

In this play through my character is a mage that wears little armour. Before a battle I double cast oak later iron flesh. I only use candle light when she is in dark places. I don't abuse my skills.

Restoration dose take a while. Use wards to deflect magic attacks if you a mage of some sort. Also if possible you can you 'Turn Undead' or repel dead which it will level up restoration. I don't why its in restoration, I thought repel or turn spells will be in Illusion like Fury and calm spells.

I discovered that if you have Oakflesh (or any other "flesh" spell) active while in combat that you gain XP in it when you get hit, just like how you gain XP in a normal armor type by getting hit while wearing it.

Not the best thing for a squishy mage, but there are plenty of easy baddies like skeevers and skeletons and wolves that hit for not much damage that you could train with in that way.

But yeah, in general I had a harder time leveling Alteration than other skills at low levels, but once you get Telekinesis and Paralyze it seems to go up way faster.

Yes that is true about mages. They are nice soft cuddly with a bite. While I have 100 health plus 30 for extra its a good way level alteration and restoration without abusing the skill. I am using it. Also I have a flaming dog in my list of spells. When I level up I only touch magic.

Well I just found a way.

It's kinda cheap though. If you stand in that windy area in the High Hrothgar courtyard you constantly take damage, so you can just spam healing spells.

Can't you maintain oakflesh as you roam through skyrim?

It's actually very very easy to level up alteration.

Just find somewhere that has a hostile that can't reach you -- a number of camps have cages wolves that are good for this -- and cast Oakflesh over and over and over again until you get high enough skill (around 40) that you can buy Detect Life from vendors.

Then go to the Riften market and cast detect life constantly. Stand near the castle so you detect the castle guards also.

All told you can get to 100 alteration in an hour or so, two at most.

If you follow the river in the Rift you can find a fort called Treva's Watch. A guy camped outside wants your help clearing out the bandits, and as a reward he always gives you a Detect Life spell tome.

I remember going up there long ago for the main quest and the damage you took seemed pretty severe. Is it possible for fast healing to keep pace with around 50 restoration, 300 magica, 310 hitpoints and maybe like a +60 magic boost from gear?

I maxed out alteration/illusion just to get more skill perks for enchanting/smithing/alchemy and my main combat skills. Desperately need restoration up.

the way that i am doing it right now is go to Riften in the center of the market keep casting Detect life. also have some items enchanted with Magika Regen helps a lot. and if you have the gold i went to the College of Winterhold and bought a Master Aleration Robe just bc the alt spells cost 20% less and makes your magika regenerate 150% times faster.
