Black Star as a non-enchanting mage...impossible?

If you have trouble, try getting the Atronach standing stone; makes just about any spell caster fight *much* easier. IIRC, the stone is in that region south of Windhelm, where all the hot springs are.
Yes, definitely. I just did this quest again last night at level 9 with a pure mage (no armor or weapons at all) and I realized how much I depended on the Atronach sign. First, one dremora came and I summoned a flame atronach and used two flame spells. Then two came but With the atronach sign, I can cast two spells indefinitely since the dremoras just keep filling my magicka so they went down with just a little kiting on my part and some back-up from the flamer. Same with Malyn although I had to do a quick heal with him.
I think the Atronach sigh was key.

And a level 19 with none of those things yet?

I was only level 19 when I first tried it, go back later is my advice. And go back well tooled up.

Getting the helmet of the unburned and some decent potions is doable very early. That gives you maybe 60-70% resistance to fire. Plus you could always create a dark elf who has a natural resistance to fire.

OK, this thing is kicking my rear end BAD...3 fireball spamming mobs, and the only defense I've got is a ward (which is self defeating because it just svcks my mana out rendering me incapable of doing any damage) or a potion (which only prevents 20% of the one-shot-kill fireballs they're tossing). Only thing I can figure is to spam fire atronochs, but these jerks heal themseleves, and it's DPS isn't enough to down even one.

Is there any way to beat this other than going to the Companions and becoming a werewolf to rip those fireball spammers up, or spending a zillion gold to powerskill enchanting, find a fire resist item, and win that way?

My mage is on Expert with only 100 HP. I had the same problem you had, and actually it was even harder because in a necromancer with no perks in Atronachs. My winning strategy was thus, as soon as the first guy runs away I ran up and cast two Storm Atronachs on the corner he was standing on, charging up to this point allows you safety and your Atronachs can fight better. Then let them duke it out with the approaching Dremora, occasionally had to recast an atronach. Make sure you stay back from your Atronachs because the main guy will cast Chain Lightning and if you're too close it will jump to you. If you keep this up your Atronachs should get a kill or two and for whatever reason once the first Dremora dies the other should de agro and the main guy will run back to the end of the dungeon. From there its easier because you'll only fight one at a time.

trying to deal with him from long range is a lot harder than closing in on him and dealing with him directly.

As I recall, I charged in against the mage while he was talking and before he could run away behind his buddies. I was a destruction mage. I avoided his buddies until pulled out of there.

I did this with the Atronach stone and Dragonskin. Even 50% absorb should give you a bit of a leg up, you could probably cast a Flame Atronach in front of you to soak up the fireballs, but with 100% magic absorb summons are absorbed 100% of the time. Not sure if you are Breton though.

1. Frenzy or Calm
2. Dragonskin (Breton)
3. Rose of Sangiure
4. Staff of Frost/Shock Atronach (Crafted in winterhold)

There are dead angles in that place. Lure out their spells.

I ALWAYS make a Staff of Storm Atronach when i start a new character. It's my little doomsday device.
