The big question...

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:41 am

I truly want to know; was Skyrim developed for console or PC? Don't try to give me any of that "it was simply developed as a game" or "it was developed for both." It is either a PC port, or a console port, because that's the way life works. I want to know which. I only own it on PC, and while i was extremely underwhelmed on launch, I always reminded myself how nearly all Bethesda games are meh at the start and only get better with time. Don't get me wrong, I love skyrim, but there are so many rookie mistakes in here that are uncharacteristic. (for those of you who will whine and say "NO UR WRONG. PROVE IT A** HOLE. UR, UR JUST MAD BRO." an example would be the small number of re-bindable keys, along with the INITIAL lack of 4gb support.) Is this Bethesda making a console port (and HOPEFULLY learning their lesson **remember your best games and largest circle of support are on the PC wink wink nudge nudge**) or being rushed, and simply taking the faster way out as they had too due to time constraints? (and yes I am aware of their AMAZING reception and willingness to fix so many things that needed it which is so much like them)

So back to the big, simplified question; is Skyrim a console port (made for console, ported to PC) or a PC port (made for PC and ported to console)?

I truly hope it is the latter, and if not I hope everyone can see why developing for the PC is better. I have nothing against consoles, hell I own all 3 current generation ones. (though I bought two of them a long while ago and 1 exclusively as a blue-ray player) But developing for them is counter intuitive. If you develop on a PC you can take advantage of the mouse pointer, the (near) limitless keys, the hardware (though you would also have to take into account the hardware of the current consoles) and most importantly the VERY critical fans. It is simple fact that PC fans are the biggest jerks about their games. We like our games to be the best they could be (and get loud and noisy if they aren't). If you develop to a standard that is extremely high, your game will inherently be better than otherwise. So again I ask, what was Skyrim made for? (and if for some reason this got you all up in arms at Bethesda if they "sold out" by developing for consoles - don't be. As I said, their receptiveness to the PC community has been very good, and they are doing so much exclusively for us.)

Like I say in all my threads, please no flame wars, no big arguments, no anger. I want to know what the answer is, and if Bethesda has said anything about it.

Thank you for your time in reading this thread, and have a happy holiday season!

It seems to me it has been developed for PC. Simply because with the amount of mods and console commands you can do it only seems logical. For instance, *minor spoiler* there is an archway NNE of Riften that with a console command allows you to travel outside of, seeing as in game it is the end of the map and tells you to go back the way you came. Beyond this archway is what can be made out to be Vvardenfell in Morrowind, and Cyrodiil from Oblivion, all this being in super low resolution. I myself play on xbox and find it frustrating that I am unable to go out and explore these provinces, it does make me want to buy it on PC just to experience it. :)

They have not hidden the fact that its a console port, from the 360 to be specific. Remember though, in the end pc is always better (in terms of graphics and stability) due to mods.

I would not care which they developed for first as long as they took full advantage of all the pc has to offer over consoles, but they clearly did not.

Edit: @Scamak47- Bethesda always has a console for pc TES games, they need it to test the game and allow its use by players, a win win for both parties.

I doubt it was made for the PC, because of the limitations we see in the UI and other things. I think you'd develop a game for the platform with the least amount/number of capabilities (console), and from there push it out to the platform with the most capability, which would be the PC.

If you make it for the PC first, then you would have to make so many changes to make it work in a console, I think that would be a lot more work than the other way around.

After all, money is still the final objective for a company.
