Alchemy Recipe Book - what do you want?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:51 pm

I've gotten my Alchemy Workbench sorted out to the point where I can actually include a fully functioning "recipe book" - that is, simple links that directly configure the workbench settings and display the resulting recipes. For example, http://209.46.18.232/wiers.us/skyalc/workbench.php?recipes_tab&show=results&premix=five_effect

The http://209.46.18.232/wiers.us/skyalc/workbench.php?recipes_tab&show=pre_mix, and my question to you all is - what other recipes might people like to see on that list? That can be either a general class or recipe, or a specific setting configuration you've found (just paste the text from the settings display here.)

Ultimately I'll be configuring the site so it can spit out a tiny-url style link to whatever settings you come up with yourself, so you could (for example) configure the workbench to exclude ingredients you do not have in your inventory, then grab the url for those configurations and bookmark them, but I might include a "common ingredients" setting on the recipe book page that excludes all ingredients not sold in alchemy stores or above a certain cost or some such.

Honestly the only potions I use (I'd say 95% of the time) is healing. I did use a potion to buff the Smith skill (40%) last night and I must say I was impress with the results, so I'll do that again. Occasionally a good poison is nice.

If I could have one that added multiple resistances, like 30% resistance to Fire, Frost and Lightning, that would be great to carry around. Since each potion is .5 pounds (or units, whatever) just having 10 of those instead of carrying 10 for each resistance (30 potions) would help a lot.

The ones that buff arrow damage and such seem a total waste to me. I'd rather just shoot a second arrow and sell the potion. Price of an arrow, basically free since I find them everywhere. Price of the potion, about 150+ gold. Seems pointless to waste those.

Fority Smithing (and Enchanting) - check. Popular potions indeed.

Poisons - I have a few faves for combat use I shall include. Its amazingly how easy to make and how effective they are (on some enemies, at least).

Potions that provide protection from frost, fire, AND electricity are all 3 ingredient potions that use Hawk's Beak and Snowberries as two of the ingredients. For the third, any common fire resist ingredient will do. Of those, Snowberries, Mudcrab Chitin, & Hawk Beak is the winner, because it also has a restore stamina effect. I'll get that recipe setting in place, but finding Hawk's Beak is not easy. Time to go skeet shooting, eh?

I agree on the archery boosting potions being fairly pointless, but for different reasons. Damage buffing potions are cool in theory. I can make way more potions than I can sell, even with the "merchant" and "investor" perks, so "wasting" them is a non issue. The problem is that in the excitement of combat, I forget to use them. I suppose if I played a sniper or stealth assassin type who planned out his kills, I might use them more- but I tend to just rush in and chop stuff up.
There's some nice health regen & fortify damage combos that work nicely for such folks, but the duration tends to be a bit low.

That's awesome. Great, great job in doing this.

Must have taken a while to do all this. Thank you very much for all your hard work. I'm sure many will appreciate it.

I sure will. :)

The only recipes that are important in the beginning of the game are ones whose ingredients are easily accessible, that restores health or has a good resale value.

OMG this is brilliant! I've always been into Alchemy, it's one of the first skills I level in every TES game! I love your site!

Cure Disease potions come in handy, you never know what you might pick up in the wild.
Paralysis Poisons are another favorite of mine, they can quickly turn a fight in my favor.
Resist Frost AND Fire potion is also easily produced and can be sold for profit early on.

Again, amazing site!

I must be hauling around a couple hundred pounds of potions. It's amazing how quiet those vials are and how compact.

Thank you for the compliment, and yes it did take a some time (I estimate maybe 30-40 hours so far, with another 30-40 planned). But that's far, far less than I've spent playing the game, and both are time well spent in my book.

I'm a web programmer by (recently begun) profession and (recently completed) education, and started out maybe 5 years back doing such things as a hobby (literally with a book on how to program open in my lap as I typed). I figure its good to keep that up - with a job like that you have to keep learning new skills and I don't get to experiment with any tech I pick to at work, and certainly don't get to pick the subject matter. I'm hoping I can whip out my tablet at my next job interview and do a demo when they ask "what fun projects have you worked on lately"? I figure the chances are quite good at least one of the people who will be deciding if I get the job also has played Skyrim...
I've actually already put stuff i learned doing the workbench into practice at work, to very good effect, so like I said, time well spent.

Um, yeah, rambling. Point being, I'd strongly encourage anybody who likes such things to learn how to program! With today's tech, you can do a whole lot of cool stuff with free (by which I mean open source) programming tools - in fact, the stuff I use at work is the SAME stuff I use at home, for free!

Now if I can just figure out how to do some mods, I can get the alchemy perks and in-game labs working the way I'd like...

EDIT - crap, how embarassing. In my rush to get the recipe book working, I introduced some errors to the normal way of handling workbench settings. I found a fix, will be up on the web (along with the new recipes) tommorrow AM.

Edit - fixed, http://209.46.18.232/wiers.us/skyalc/workbench.php?recipes_tab&show=pre_mix.
