Ehm what manual?
You mean those two pages with very minimal instructions?
Hmpf.

I wish this was a game where you needed a thick manual to get to know how it works.
I really dont care about people too lazy to read, I want a complex and engaging game.
A game that you can play straight of the bat by definition cannot be this.

yes my manula was howe to instal the game in 5 diferent languich

This isn't interesting, just some idiot who can't work out a game. Skyrim was my first TES game, and I worked it out with no problems at all, you just need common sense.

The opening sequences are there to teach you a few game basics and immerse you in the world and story. You can blame Half-Life for that. I understand it, but I've been playing video games for three decades. I think I can figure out how to jump. At least make it skippable the second time.

The same goes for Daedra-related conversations. Why can't I skip through those like every other conversation?

I wish Bethesda would consider multiple prologues. That was the best thing about Dragon Age: Origins. Each race had a distinct beginning that gave you different motivations.

Sounds like a clueless friend. Skyrim's UI has problems, but if my mom, who hates computers, can figure out the puzzles in Myst, he should be fine with the levers in Skyrim.

Skyrim is of course a very different experience from WoW. The idea is to absorb the world and interact with it in whatever way you see as most fun within the parameters of the game. That bugs a lot of people for some reason and they perceive all TES games as a directionless, unfocused mess. Their problem I guess.

And why do people keep saying Morrowind gives you no direction at the start? The guy hands you secret orders and tells you to take them to Caius Cossades in Balmora. Pretty cut and dry. I think he even suggests taking the silt strider. Caius does a good job giving you things to do too. It doesn't make the game easy, but you have goals right from the start.

Research isn't the term that we should be using. He couldn't be bothered to READ! He didn't even look through the inventory! :swear:

Default UI needs to be improved, though. The text is hard to read at times. Also, whoever thought rendering the local map in black & white was a good idea should be fired.

I agree. Emphatically. I played through the tutorial opening of Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas once and then saved a game right at the end, so I could just load that up and make whatever character I wanted to play that particular game.

I can't believe Skyrim doesn't do this. I hope one of the very first mods cuts that crap out.

But on your friends first game...I know how he feels. That was the first couple of times I tried to play Morrowind. I wasn't really used to non-linear roleplaying games. They let me off the boat, I made a character, learned how to swing a weapon and cast a spell. And then I was like "um...what now?". I was used to having someone tell me what to do next. It annoyed me. I was just wandering around trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to be doing. Thinking "who would design a game like this? It's [censored]. Good graphics though..."

The 3rd time I sat down to try to get into it, I finally got it. And after that, it was genius. The best game ever.

I hated some of the changes made in Oblivion at first too. But then it became the best single-player game ever. And Skyrim has won me over. I still don't like the changes, but those negatives don't overpower the positives.

And, yeah, I've been playing WoW since November 2004. But I always quit playing it for 2 or 3 months whenever Elder Scrolls or a Fallout game is released. And then, often go back to them. It's a nice break, to be playing a single player game every now and then. And despite all the complaints I've seen (i've made a few) the games really ARE rich in content, and immersive. Really fun.

You get an auto-save when you step out of the cart, you just quick save your current game, reload the auto and do a manual save

These games aren't simple and they aren't for everyone. It's ok...the friend probably likes other things. I don't jump from game to game so I have the time to learn everything the open world games have to offer and it's a LOT. There so much to learn about alchemy and enchanting and there's math involved and I'm not good at math and some enemies have a weakness to fire and a resistance to frost, etc. It's a lot and takes a lot of time...like reading a book. It's just not a game for everyone. :)

wow has been dumbed down umpteen times over the years so that an amoeba can play it. Perhaps your friend did not notice this devolution in his game playing ablities? The UI is bad, and the hotkeying is easily missed and badly implimented (try hotkeying and equipping 2 x iron daggers dual wield) so some of his complaints are valid but rage quitting? lol if that isnt classic wow behaviour I don't know what is. It's not a very conscientious review.

Not supposed to be a conscientious review. It's supposed to be funny, however it highlights some problems with the elderscrolls trying to become more accessible to a wider audience. I hope this doesn't spiral into an easier game for the future. Your typical casual gamer isn't going to pick up on games like this right away, this is a good thing IMO but do businesses see it that way? Doesn't look like it.

Try the X3 series an open space game. Big manual tons of guides pretty hefty learning curve.

I disagree. A manual is only needed for complex mechanics but a game like MW, where I never needed to read the manual, was engaging because the world was involved and complex.

Exactly!!!!

Oh, horse manure.
People were complaining about the degeneracy of youth in the late Roman Republic. Doubtless it was nothing new then and doubtless in 20 years time my children will be complaining about the degeneracy of youth and how its not like when they young anymore.

So true

...

1. That's your opinion. I could give you some simple facts that will prove that the game is dumbed down (not completly!), but I don't want to start a big discussion here.
2. That's right. They should concentrate on the pc.
3. Really? I don't think so. I can't tell a big difference between these three.
4. You can save before the character creation screen pops up.

Oh and one last thing: Your friend will love the fable franchise, keep that in mind if you need a present.

I am also new to Skyrim, I have played WoW and Rift, I made several chars.. getting them to around lvl 3 before deleting them, but learned how to play:) my mage is now 13 and I love the game, don't mind the cart ride.. I go and get a drink :) But I find the some things a bit clumsy and slow.. using the mouse to steer and W to run, using a key to open the menu every time I need to heal or change spells . having a home is great and adds to my RP, but not being able to customize my house because I cannot put objects where I want them spoils it a bit. I do like exploring the world.. and have had some fun encounters along the way, love the crafts, including cooking , love the books that tell the stories and lore of the game. But I do feel that different controls for the PC version would be better. And I love the way I can level at my own speed.. can fully develop my RP ..can drift about getting herbs .. can do quests as I feel like without the pressure or competition of other players. The graphics are good and the kids annoying.. just like RL ! lol

I'm not claiming its not dumbed down, merely stating its exaggerated. They shouldn't concentrate on the PC but they should port it correctly if they are going to port it. I would love the concentration to be on the PC but I'm not arrogant enough to demand it. You will always have to redo the alduin scene and the first dungeon if you want to make a new character. Editing your race through the console will warp your skill points.

The exploration was a big thing for me too. I'm still finding new and interesting stuff after 90 hours of play.
