Things you wish you knew in your first playthrough

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:24 am

A friend of mine played Fallout 3 and got frustrated with an inventory full of empty nuka cola bottles, rusty tin cans, broken plates, you get the picture. You don't have to pick that crap up. It's litter.
But can't you use them as ammo for that launcher thing? I never used it - I think I made one once, but couldn't easily figure out how to load it so I gave up on it. :P

You didn't do Arniel's Endevor? Good quest. You should do it. The reward is pretty cool too.
I'll see if he gives me the quest, but I'm sure I've talked to him and he's never offered it.

The ONLY think I had an issue with was that I couldn't shout, even so I had dragon souls! I had to check the forums to see that I had to UNLOCK the shouts... that was my biggest DUH moment LOL

Well ok, there is one other thing. I would have never picked up those stupid Bard instruments, if I had known they were bugged... LOL
Yeah, I didn't know about the shout unlocking either. I mean...you, Idiot! How could you not know that...everyone knows that. :P

Oh...yes...the named bard instruments. <_<

I wish I had known killing chickens gave you a bounty. I know I'm not the only one who's gotten the entirety of Riverwood to go into a murderous frenzy over that chicken.

For Oblivion, I picked up every piece of junk in site until I realized that useless junk was useless junk.

What makes this even funnier is that brooms ARE used for something.

I wish I knew that you had to focus on more than 4 skills in order to reach level 50, my first character is stuck at level 43 because I only wanted him to use bows, two-handed, heavy armor, and a little bit of sneak.
This one is news to me (L 41). I use bows, Destruction and one-handed. Also have done some enchanting and smithing, but not a lot. Should I be broadening my skillset?

There are 3 different parts to this quest. It's pretty cool.

Well, damn, now you ruined your camera just to prove a point.
No I just put some fire salt on it and it dried it right up, so it's as good as new  Lol

Those look like they were taken in Ilinalta's Deep.
Yes they where

Leveling only slows down, once you max out your chosen skills. Like my sneak/archery character is around lvl 56 - sneak is 100, archery is 100, smithing is 100, Enchanting is 100 and a few other things are. You level when you level your skills, so if you have say have archery at 100, but one handed is at 60, then just use your sword more often and you will level up. You do level much easier if you use more than 4 skills yes, but you don't need to put perks in other skills that you don't want to. If your skills are NOT at 100, then don't worry about it. :)

I think this happens to everyone. It takes at least one playthrough to figure out things like stats and perks as well as the optimum way to complete quests (as per your liking).

As for me, I didn't realise you could untrap trapped treasure chests until my fourth playthrough. Doh!

What do you mean?

I finally got Gane's quest. I don't know if I got a reward though. He's at the point where he's "waiting" on the final piece and now he only gives me the non-interactable "Hmm. You need something?" when I talk to him. I'll check back with him a few game days/weeks later.

No I just put some fire salt on it and it dried it right up, so it's as good as new  Lol
Damn. I put mine in a Dwarven Convector and it ruined it.

What do you mean?
If you look closely at treasure chests with traps on them you can see a tripwire on the right (and maybe sometimes left) side that you can "Activate"

Edited for clarity.

Do the Blood on the Ice quest ASAP, and don't read the Butcher's Journal that Calixto has in the chest on the second level of his house. I believe these things contributed to me not being able to trigger that quest on my main character.

I sold all my Gold and Silver ingots and all jewels. I didn't realize until my second time through the game that I could smith jewelry with them.

Also, I wish I had known the Solitude house was borked. Then I wouldn't have worked for the 36k gold to buy and furnish it.

More than a few, actually:
  • Blood on the Ice quest
  • The Abandoned House in Markarth, from early on.
  • Spell Tome: Transmute Ore
  • Gloombound Mine, from early on.
  • Taking followers along
  • Treating followers like my own character (i.e. giving them custom enchanted gear) and making them an incredible force multiplier.
  • The Atronach Stone, from early on.
