Wonder if anyone can help - I'm a level 40 and tryin to be the Thane of some holds, I'm a Thane of like 4-5 now I just went to Riften as part of the main quest. I finished "Cornered Rat" I think it was called so went back to Riften and did the "helping hand" quest then the next 2 parts something about skooma, well it says in the guide that after I completed the 3 part skooma quest - the Jarl should befriend me and ask that I help 5 ppl in Riften, but I dont get that - I even helped a couple of ppl yet nothing about befriending me - anyone know whats up?

This has glitched on me. I know to be the thane and to buy a house you have to do the quests. yadda yadda, help 5 times.

So I bought the house. Now it tells me to report to the jarl to get noticed as thane. I can't do it. She never acknowledges me.

I gave up. I did do the 5 quests, but I can't get the Thane part. I really think it's bugged as I have managed to do all the other ones.

sorry edited: I do believe SHE gives you some quests, but I can't get those from her. I was level 20 when I started and level 22 when I tried to get her to acknowledge me.

You got to give a health potion to an argonian that is going to loose her job, after that ask her about her dealer then that should get you on your way to becoming the Thane.

I did that. And went into some dwemer ruins. for another quest. I just can't get the title. I have started over with a new character though and maybe since the patches have come out, it will go more smoothly. But I do believe there is a bug in here, as my son can't finish it either and he has his own character/computer stuff.

He said he did that already. This quest is notorious for glitching. You can fix it if on PC but on console you're screwed.

Weird. I was able to become Thane of Riften with no problem. She asked me to help people and I already had helped them, then I bought the house, and became Thane. Good luck.

Yeah, I did that and finished the 3 part quest line - the guide says its then she should befriend me and tell me to help out the ppl of rift - I never get that part - I just keep getting the same options...something about the war,thieves guild and something else, nothing about helping her ppl out.

Its svcks cause I got the glitch for the companions quest and had to go back....now I might have to do the same but I just dont wanna go back and waste my time if its gonna be the same crap - I really wanted to be the thane of all the holds, I got ocd with certain things.

hmmm. can someone send me a message about how to console it? I KNOW i did that quest and one other and I own the home. Sorry to HI-jack the thread but this was a problem for me.

If you are having the issue on PC use these console commands:

gettstage FreeformRiftenThane
(This will tell you what stage of the quest you are on, probably 0 if it is glitched or you haven't done the quest for the Argonian woman)

setstage FreeformRiftenThane 10
(That will start the quest and it should auto update to reflect how many villagers you have helped)

@phillygirl41: If you have the house in Riften it isn't glitched for you, you can only get the house if you have finished the quest the OP is having trouble with.

Well sorry OP, if it's glitched for you then, well, you're going to need to restart or just ignore it.

but I can't become Thane tho. The quest marker arrow keeps telling me to talk to her, but when I do she has nothing else to say to me.
She has not named me Thane. Obviously it's active in my journal. I dunno. it's just bugged.
I guess i'll dig around and try to console this too.

Is there a chick called Lona in your house? If there is then you are a thane.
