The Headless Horseman will always lead you to one location, where he just stands there as the graveyard he has led you to comes alive and you have to fight a bunch of skellies and one levelled Draugr. He only appears at night, and if you fast travel alot, chances are you will NEVER see him. The location?

I've seen this ghastly unnatural apparation a few times on the night time roads during my late hour walks. Truly an unearthly specter whose unnerving sight drains the very spirit of all joy overcoming it with a radiating darkness of all consuming gloom tempting one to suicides sorrowful beckoning. If only these eyes had never gazed upon the deceptive angelic white brilliance of this malevolent phantasm from the deepest depths of the planes of Oblivion. If only..if only..

Just wanted to add that in researching this guy (couldn't remember the name of the destination), it was mentioned that you CAN ride his horse! So if you ever see him dismounted (he has been seen chasing the horse rather than riding it), get on the horse! It apparently acts like any other 'wild' horse - i.e. wanders off when you dismount - but it cannot be killed and has endless stamina.

Gonna take a while to confirm that tho, I think.

Add me to the list of folks that have not yet encountered this ghost. I'm currently on a character that does not fast travel, so perhaps that will change soon. Sounds.....interesting.

I can envision everyone on this thread sitting around a campfire with flashlights pointing up under your chins. :D

I like the story about the song. I'd like to think it's that. :tes:

I like the idea about it being Ragnar, but I wonder now about the connection with the current Rorikstead. I've spent some time there recently and there's actually a guy there named Rorik and IIRC he is the biggest landowner there and I'm pretty sure he indicates that he actually founded the settlement and it's named after him. So unless Ragnar the Red was killed and immortalized in song fairly recently, then "Old Rorikstead" and the Rorikstead we visit in the game aren't the same town. It could be just an oversight and the two are intended to be the same, I dunno, but it kinda ruined the whole Ragnar/Rorikstead/Horseman connection for me. :(

Well, the term "Old Rorikstead" as used in the song could just be for poetic effect, but now that you mention it, it doesn't really make sense that Rorik founded the town. Rorikstead is mentioned in Atlas of Dragons, which was written in the 2nd Era. I don't remember whether or not Rorikstead was also in Arena.

Well apparently the in-game dialogue does indicate that the Rorik you meet founded the town, I just looked it up to refresh my memory.
Rorik, a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Nord http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Warrior_(class)#Warrior, is a former member of the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Imperial_Legion and founder of the small farming community of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Rorikstead.
When if Rorikstead was named after him, he will tell the tale: "Yes, that's right. Look around you. Most of the lands you see are mine. Most of this I purchased while my comrades were fighting in the south, helping the Empire against the Aldmeri Dominion. Back then, nothing would grow here and so the land was worthless. Now, thanks to hard work and the gods' blessings, our farms prosper."
He says he bought the land and founded the town after coming back from the great war, so obviously this Rorikstead is not the same Rorikstead as those that were around before, but I'm pretty sure it matches up to the one mentioned in the "Atlas" (with the dragon mound nearby). Unless there was an "old" Rorikstead there that got destroyed and he founded a new one, but it's a pretty big coincidence that the city he didn't found was named the same... Meh, I'm gonna go with this being an unfortunate oversight.
