91 + Dragons Killed and counting

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 4:33 am

Thats how I am playing my last chars. Playing my main.. oh God, they spawn almost every fast travel and its getting really annoying to fight them, wait to land, trap them there with that shout and then kill them afraid to not lose any of the NPCs around me.

Dragons should be equal to the shouts and their upgrades, I mean the ones random spawning. Those living on a rock could respawn forever, because they are not forced on us.

How are you able to get that many dragons? I got like 9 all around the same time, but now I NEVER get them.

That would feel rather contrived don't you think?

No doubt, but probably the easiest route.

The thing is, there is supposed to be dragons flying around. If players never encountered a dragon people would be saying, "What the hell Bethesda? I'm dragonborn and don't have any dragons to kill!"

Finding that happy medium is hard, which is why there are hotspots for dragons I'd assume.

A quest from P-nax or the blades could alternatively provide a means to end the quantity of the dragons, which could be a scenario in an expansion/DLC... but I'd just hate to see the Age of Dragons without, well, dragons.

I had souls to spare in my first "playthrough" (ended when feeling overpowered, had done very little in the game by then), haven't released the dragons since because I find them annoying (and awesome at the same time). That doesn't mean I don't want them around, I'd just like for the madness to stop sometime. CRPGs should have some levels of "annoyances", that's pretty much game design 101. But annoyances work best if you can make a sacrifice to get rid of it somehow. This exists for their release - you only get to use their word powers if you actually release them, which is fine by me. But I'd prefer it if there was something in the other end as well, like maybe having to clear out all the "spawning points" or whatever, to make it stop. I haven't played through the main quest yet though, so I don't know if there is a story behind it preventing this.

I've been getting them in waves. At first, I couldn't go anywhere without dragons, and sometimes, 2 of them with a third visible in the distance. Then, they seemed to disappear...now, I'm getting them back again.

I don't know what it is, and I'm still needing to get a few more words for the shouts I do have, and I'm wondering if there are more shouts available, but they seem to have dried up as well. I think I'm up around 33 or 35 dragon souls available, and I've got a cupboard full of bones and scales.

Hmm. I hope that I can get more dragon souls before I find more words of power. (I have a few that still need unlocking.)

I have a goal before I get deeper in the MQ and CW questline: all dragon shouts unlocked. But...that might not work if it repeats like my last playthrough where I never got enough dragons to do that.

In my opinion:

1. Dragons should have been rare and far more powerful.

2. Level 2 and 3 words should have required more than one soul to unlock.

3. A dragon below the player's level should have awarded a fragmented portion of their soul instead of a whole one due to being trivial.

4. Dragons should not have always dropped bones and scales upon death. It can be rationalized that the body's condition was too poor.

I have 58 shouts and 33 dragon souls and when you count Alduin and the several dragons killed but did not give up their souls, it means I've killed more than 91 dragons when does the maddness stop?

There is a mod to convert dragon souls to perks. It might give you some incentive.

Hopefully there will be a mod when the CK is released do that upon completion of the MQ dragon encounters are reduced to either 90% of the frequency they currently are or so that they stop completely

Or stop the sillyness of needing souls for shouts lol, grey beards, Ulfric, and pretty much anyone who isn't Dragonborn did just fine. not to mention Draugr seem to be able to toss a FUSRODAH at you 50% faster than you can. and since this is a game you can still keep the reasonings for learning shouts very fast. the Grey beards teach you 2 shouts and give you their accumulated knowlegde in 90% less the time it takes to search out a Dragon, Kill it, play the anim, get the shout and activate it with a soul ;p.
they need to train for years though

I think there should be no more dragons than there are Words of Power.

On the other hand, I like the challenge the occassional dragon brings. How are people finding so many? I've played IDK how long and have yet to fight more than a dozen.

Can't limit Dragons since they are not an enemy but a resource node you use for crafting. You don't have a finite supply of Iron or Ebony Ore. Dragons are no different. Due to how the stupid Enchanting system works and you cannot overwrite Enchants, you will need to keep making Dragon armor if that is your path.

I'm currently level 61 and for that character I have more than enough dragon bones and scales to make whatever armor I need so thats not really an issue for me. Also I dont remember going to the Mages Collage to get some training and getting attacked by an ancient ebony, I dont think anyone wants to get rid of the dragons all together I think we just want them to become more and more rarer so we are not constently having to deal with them when we want to do something else in the game.

Here is the way I think it should work. Since we need 60 Souls for the Shouts, then that is the target.

1. During the MQ, Random Encounters happen like they do now, even near or in cities. Gives a sense of urgency to the events and this goes on as long as the MQ is still open.

2. Word Walls or Dragon Priest Locations or Lairs will have dragons, even after the MQ, until they are killed. Word Walls that are in Interiors would spawn a random attack somewhere near the entrance/exit to the dungeon These location dragons don't respawn. However, these dragons would not bother the towns and or most settlements because they are not that close to them. This is an effort to preserve NPCs while giving more dragons to battle.

3. Radiant Quest Dragons (Bounty Quests) will show up even after the MQ . These are almost never near a town anyway. Again, to preserve the NPCs.

This would give more than 60 Dragons to unlock all the Shouts, if someone wanted that. And, they could battle Random Dragons as long as they want to keep the MQ alive, and even after the MQ, the fixed locations would give enough dragons to feel like one has done something. Yes, the dragon threat diminishes as the game goes on, and is greatly reduced after the MQ, but there are still plenty of them to do battle with.

More importantly, it gives satisfaction that you have actually done something about the dragon menace and not just one dragon.

It took the Grey Beards decades.
Ulfric only knows one, and you can bet he didn't learn it overnight.
The Draugr are undead/dragon servants/Mara only knows what; who knows how they learned?

The Dovahkiin is different.

At Kynesgrove, I once encountered 3 dragons in a row. One of them was the one from bonestrewn crest.

When dragon attacks are like that, then I hope it won't stop. That was intense.
