This engine has seen it's day. RAGE was an exploration of a new engine, and Beth can take what they learned from that and create one that is really well suited for a modern TESVI

I bet Bethesda continue to skimp on development like they did with Skyrim, since they are not the army of developers you think they are and it took them 5 years to make Skyrim. Unless they make it for the new consoles then it will probably still use the old Embryo engine, just like they have been for goodness knows how many years.

I like Fallout too and I want Elder Scrolls over Fallout, but there are other fans to please.

Bethesda now owns the rights to the Fallout franchise, including any possible MMO. Obsidian got to develop one game - New Vegas - as part of the legal settlement. That is done now, so in the future all Fallout games will be Bethesda's.

Given that, it is only reasonable to expect that Fallout 4 will use the same engine in Skyrim. After all, Skyrim used the same engine in Fallout 3, and Fallout 3 used the same engine in Oblivion, etc... All they have done is make tweaks to it. But the underlying code is still the same. The only thing likely to spur Bethesda to create a truly new game engine will be a new generation of console game, with modern hardware to power them. As it is now, every game they make has to be able to run on 5 year old hardware, so an honestly next-gen engine is impossible.

Considering Beth own ID, they should be using ID tech 5. It's much better than gamebryo.

Bethesda will be the one making it, just like they did with Fallout 3. Obsidian got to make New Vegas and the Fallout MMO. That was the agreement, and from thereon I think BGS controls Fallout.

I think your both getting Obsidian mixed up with Interplay. Interplay was the one making the Fallout MMO. Obsidian nor FNV had nothing to do with the court case.

Zenimax owns ID not Bethesda, which is also owned by Zenimax.

2-3 years actually. They were more than a bit busy with FO3 and it's DLC stuff

after playing rage, i can't say id tech 5 is much better than gamebryo. it certainly won't do for a tes game unless bethesda heavily modify carmack's engine. fo4 would be a good send off for the old gamebryo engine. i would prefer bethesda to create their own engine tailored for tes and fo4 just be sure to include multi core (6-8), native 64-bit, and dx11/dx11.1 support. :bunny:

I'm excited for Fallout:4, but I'm worried how they'll make it. In my opinion, the FO games have alwas been shorter, uglier and offered less replayability than the TES games. A full playthrough on FO3 with all the DLCs installed, 50 hours or so. Full playthrough on Skyrim, +170 hours.

My main problem is replayability. in FO I can make an Energy Weapons, Guns and Melee/Unarmed character, that's it. Races aside, in Skyrim, I can make an Assassin, a Mage, a Battlemage, an Archer, a Barbarian(two-handed), a Dual-wielder, etc. Factor this with the races and there are tons of different variations you can do.

Do you think Bethesda were strictly focused on developing Fallout:3 and Skyrim received no attention after Oblivion's release?

That's funny actually because I'm actually exactly opposite to you. I find it easier to role-play and have multiple play-throughs compared to TES. Just shows how each individual views a game :)

I don't think they were too focused on it. It probably got SOME attention, but not much
The only thing I know for sure that Bethesda was working on during that time period was the dragons, but I don't have a clue if they worked on anything else
