Ok so I think I may have narrowed it down to two class options. The first is a light armored two- handed weapon using Warrior with a little bit of Restoration. The second is a Pure Mage.
I had a question about the Mage, do you have to enchant your armor with Fortify Destruction to be any good? Also are they effective when using lightening bolt, fireball, and ice spear at higher levels or are there similar spells to those at higher levels?
You don't have to make an enchant suit, but many people do because that is the easiest way to play a Destruction mage at high levels. Destruction magic is a little gimped in Skyrim because the higher level spells are so mana inefficient and some of the master level spells take too long to cast.
My pure mage is only about level 37, but I am already seeing the problem. I have all the apprentice and adept level spells and I have the mana reduction perk for both, but I tend to use the apprentice level spells much more often than the adept level spell because it is much more mana efficient and I run out of mana too quickly with the adept level spell.
I have just gotten access to expert spells and I am not impressed with them. Yes, they have ranged expert level spells, similar to the apprentice level spells and they have the wall spells. But, I don't think the expert level ranged spells will be that useful without destruction enchant gear, so I am thinking of putting no more perks into magicka reducing perks, and see if I have enough perks left to max out enchant instead.
You can counter this mana efficiency problem with a free cast destruction enchant suit but there are a couple of other ways you can deal with the situation. For instance, you could spam a lot of restore magicka potions (not terribly fun).
Another solution is to take the impact perk and dual cast your apprentice level spells over and over until your foe dies. This can take a while with stronger boss monsters and may not be viable with multiple opponents, but the impact perk will effectively stagger most opponents, allowing you to repeatedly hit them.
Another solution is to focus more on conjuration or illusion and only use destruction to clean up what is left after your conjuration or illusion magic is done.
Good luck if you go mage. They are fun to play but at high levels probably won't feel as powerful as a sneak assassin or a sword and board warroir.
