I do like that they carry stuff for you, and that you can order them to SIT DOWN NOW. In that chair. Right there. Exactly.

Wait a minute. You can?

My companions constantly block and get stuck in posts and stuff. Unfortunately if you play a mage you can't survive without one at higher levels. One of the reasons I gave up on my pure mage. Then I made a spellsword and I discovered I'm still gonna need a brainless meat shield, because summons have even worse AI. And the zombies are just attrocious, they hardly even move! The zombies in Oblivion would follow you around the dungeon no problem.

Derkeethus is pretty bugged. He'll always run back to Darkwater Crossing, even if you're married and moved to your own house, and you can't speak to him when trespassing. He always says, "you shouldn't be here!" I learned the hard way not to tell him to "wait here" while trespassing as you can't get him to follow you again. I almost lost him...thankfully, attacking him causes him to leave your service and he wanders out of the building on his own. Then I was able to recruit him again.

I'd be a lot happier with them if you could talk to them, ask them what they think about what's going on, what they want to do next, what armor or weapon they'd like to have. Even if they're having fun.

As it is, they're mostly wagons who sometimes kill.

from what ive seen they do really well in fights
worlds better than those in obliv
but i definitely agree with them getting in the way especially sense skyrim dungeons have so many narrow passages

agreed. I just stopped using em after I didn't need anyone to tank
@zmach1 LYDIA is still alive for you b@#$% died on me at lvl 8

She got killed around the same time for me. I kept expecting her to get back up or return when I fast traveled (similar to Fallout:NV), but she was gone. I went back to my previous save and told her to wait, while my sneak and stealth approach took care of the formidable enemy that she just charged into. I admired her desire to protect me, but found just the opposite was happening.

Agree. They svck hard. Aside from navigational and mechanical issues, they add absolutely no social value to the adventure. They are handy mules though.

I don't mind them so far. Playing on master and they're good cannon fodder which would have rendered me dead a lot more times than if I didn't have them around. So far I've only lost my dog, and it annoyed me how I couldn't give it a proper burial - we've shared so much together :)

Companions are awful in this game.. period.

Like the OP said they block retreating, passageways, entrances... they don't even follow properly so they are miles behind you and not taking active part in battles especially in Dungeons. Worst of all they don't even have quest lines so they have no personality.

The most annoying one in the quest, is Esbern. All he does is give away your position and ramble on about dragons.

Im a ranger and just to find thoose companion that do good when you need it is a mess :(
I tried too have a mage -runned up infront of me each time i en[censored]ed something in a cave/dungeon and i killed her/him in 2 shoots, because of that, or they die because i can not help because they are in the way.
warrior is the same
I have a hunter now and 50% of the time she acctually stays behind me and shoot, but she still block me when i try to back from something or getting out of any small space. And that she moves out of the way is crap, sometimes it takes up to 10 sec or several tryies.

I wish that you could set there amount of interferance (cloose, middle, far away combat) and how cloose they stay to you.

and for thoose that say skipp companion then, why should i when i like to rp with one. I just wish they didnt make them so dumb, if they are a hunter let them use the bow and not running forward and use hands attack. (yes i made her a asum bow and she has a good amount of arrows.)

Since I changed from Lydia the game has improved a lot for me...

But here is a WTF moment. One of things I like to do is look at the scenery from high places. The eye-candy in the game is excellent even on the 360. There was this lovely view from the top of this one mountain and I stopped to have a look around... then one or both of my companions gave me a shove and I went over the edge. Fell and skidded down the mountain and when I stopped I had about 1% hp left. I thought "PHEW!".

THEN A DRAGON REACHED OVER AND CHOMPED ON ME AND FLUNG ME THE REST OF THE WAY DOWN THE MOUNTAIN... I must have landed right in front of him and he just leaned over and did a nomnom on me.

I think I stared at the screen for about 3 minutes with my jaw on the ground and then I started giggling... and couldn't stop for ages. Damn companions... bet they had a contract on me from the Dark Brotherhood. :verymad:

In Fallout the companions actually backed up when you approached them.

I think they adjusted this in a patch. I notice now that Companions will back up, but I have to stand and kind of push on them for a bit before they move out of the way.

I also now tend to tell my companions to wait more often so they are not in my way, like every time I go into my house.

Never take a companion to a dungeon. In the open world they are tolerable. In the dungeon, they are like a suicidal doorstop that always gets in the way.

Companions are very "helpful" when used correctly and properly in Skyrim, Aela the Huntress is the best and the greatest!

I'd love this game if the bloody companion code worked... but after repeatedly getting blocked into tents when I loot, getting blocked from retreating, companions committing suicide by jumping in front of me when I am casting a spell even when I HAVE TOLD THEM TO FRICKIN WAIT BEHIND, I've just given up on using a companion full stop.

I never had this companion problem in Fallout 3 or New Vegas (and isn't this supposed to be the same engine?).

Please Bethesda, PLEASE FRICKIN FIX THIS ALREADY! This should have been caught in the QA process... but I guess you bypassed this to get it out in time for the cool release date.

..Or you can do what I do, arm your companion with only a bow if you're a melee character, or a SS/2 hander if you're a mage...And leave them at home or use the console and tai (Toggle AI) on their character and tai again when you need them for pack-mule-ing...Otherwise you can DL the thousands of companion mods that will soon follow...And if you're on a console, follow the first suggestion..

They had guns. All melee going fallout character would still get in the way.

My characters were so lonely in vanilla Oblivion (360) where followers were even more limited and faceless. Followers in Skyrim are hardly perfect, but a tremendous improvement for me. I dont like them all, but my character is very attached to Lydia and Ria (who he personally trained and buffed out with Jewelry and enhanced equip). I read the trick for using wabbajack to try to get Lydia to level with you, so I tried it on her to see if I could re-set her level. She changed into a rabbit, and immediately scampered completely out of sight. I have never been so panicked and re-loaded. I decided to just let her enjoy her bread in peace. Even in FO3, my character rolls with Clover exclusively. When he exited the tranquility lane pod, he immediately took off after "dad" to rivet city assuming she was following behind. He was never so panicked, when he realized she was gone. Returned to the tranquility pod and found her waiting faithfully... "Canwe go yet?" Yes, lets...

These games have harsh, lonely environments and my characters appreciate a select group of companions that they have bonded with. They take time to understand their strengths and weaknesses in battle, and enjoy the added complexity of working with them effectively. And, the companionship albeit limited, is appreciated.

Agreed, it's a terrible quest line that's buggy. Skjor comes back to life thanks to bugs.

The girl power in this game is overwhelming, it's like the Spice Girls back in the 90s all over again.

Cant describe how annoying it is when you line up a perfect shot with your bow only for you stupid companion to run into the back you, and getting pushed into the paths of swinging axes.
