I've never done an archer build. But I would imagine you'd want heavy armor to take all the damage that you'll receive if anyone gets past your ranged attack. And conjuration is always good, because you can conjour something to occupy your enemies while you sit back and pick them off with you archery skills.

Light armor seems to be a favorite among the community though. So I will let them extol the virtues of light armor. I use heavy armor (because I think that fits with my blacksmith character). But really, if you are good enough with a bow, then it really shouldn't matter what class of armor you wear. If you can kill a higher level enemy with a poisoned deadric arrow then what's the use of having clothes on at all? I suppose you could enchant the items you wear to help your archery skills too. So, that is something to keep in mind.

If you will be sneaking, very useful for an archer, you will want Light Armor. It's quieter and you can max out any armor. My Nightingale hits 600 when wearing all the armor gear, buffed jewelery can make quite a difference.

I'm lvl 31 as a stealthy archer. I don't enchant or smith and just use the stuff I find. I am halfway through the thief quest as I am not fast traveling and pretty much explore every place I come up to.

I took the perk that allows 3x sneak damage.

I mainly do One Handed, but Archery is my third or fourth highest skill. One Handed, Heavy Armor, and then Sneak and Archery. I've had no problems sneaking in Heavy Armor. Consider Smithing to improve your bow (and armor), Enchanting for some effects on the bow, and maybe Alchemy for poisoning your foes, or fortifying Archery.

Ok I've played two archer characters in skyrim. Multiple in Oblivion cuz I love archery. Here are some things I follow unconsciously when playing. I don't feel overpowered and have plenty of challenges.
  • Sneaking is an archer's best friend when starting out the double damage can make all the difference between success and an sword in your chest
  • Light armor is quieter, lighter(for running from enemies), and makes more sense realistically speaking
  • Smithing and enchanting is an option not a necessity with this build. You can find pretty good bows and gear ingame
  • Perks for archery are very useful so get them when you can.
  • I personally never need to move past the first perk for light armor. Sneak perks are also optional past the first one.
  • I dual wield twin steel axes at the moment and will probably continue to dual wield as I move up the weapon classes
There you go if u have any questions I have no probs answering.

Edit: I completely forgot (THANK YOU GUY BELOW ME!!!) POISONS ARE AN ASSET YOU'D BE CRAZY  TO IGNORE.

Plus alchemy is a great hobby when not saving the world.

Archey has a relatively slow attack speed,so if you don't plan on useing stealth then heavy armor would be the way to go I think,at least not includeing smithing.

But the beauty of archery comes from stealth ,X3 damage from a stealth attack, thats bow and arrow damage combined.
With the right perks in stealth you can get multiple stealth attacks from range easily, just be patient and learn how to aim.
Next comes the alchemy skill, poison your bow and an enemy may never know what hit them.

I haven't tied conjuring a bow yet, maybe I'll get around to it some time, but regular bows work fine.

My archer is relatively typical, she focuses on stealth, archery, alchemy and only some light armor since you shouldn't be getting hit to much with stealth.I will also round her off with some lockpicking and pickpocketing perks just to make her a good thief.
Lock picking and pickpocketing aren't really neede that much so they get perked last.

I unlike alot of other poeple tend to like putting points into stamina.
Not just for the extra carrying capacity, you can get a pickpocket perk fot that, but for being able to sprint around when you get discovered, also for the zooming perk.

I just started using an archer about a week ago. Here's what I've been focusing on: Archery, light armor, one handed (for close encounters), enchanting, sneak.
Make sure you have a weapon on hand in case an enemy gets too close and the bow becomes a drag. I've been using a scimitar because they're fast but powerful, and hell, they just look great on a sneaky archer.

All good points although I should add that I use Conjuration to supplement ranged attacks instead of the close proximity One Handed. A couple of great lower level Conjuration spells are Summon Flame Atronach and Bound Bow. Flame Atronachs are straight death for distracted enemies who can't focus on your arrows. Bound Bow is also great because the damage is good and you get to use BOTH Archery and Conjuration perks (e.g. Bound Weapons do more damage, Critical Hit, Power Shot).

Unlike some of the other forum-goers, I think Sneak is somewhat too overpowered when coupled with Archery. Don't get me wrong, Sneak has great perks. However, my opinion is that you want to build up your offensive Archery early. And, my playing style just makes it too easy for characters to quickly dispose of enemies with Sneak. IMO.
