Can you theoretically play this game wrong?

If your friend is having fun, he is playing the game the right way.

Yes, you can play the game to provide more or less of a challenge, but there is no right or wrong there, just preference.

Your friend is a munchkin. Nothing wrong with that though, if he like it he should go ahead with it.

As some have mentioned a certain Radiant Quest type can easily be broken by this for some reason, but other than that he is not breaking the game. It was designed so he could have the option to do so if he wish.

My friend had like 15 hours played and was only level 4. He is the only person who can actually "play skyrim wrong". He just ran around and killed [censored] and explored.

It would be really fun if hostile enemies would chase you indefinitely and into other cells. You could run around punching everyone and have the guards chase you from town to town, GTA-style. I thought of this because I was going to suggest it would be the wrong way to play, but if it's fun, it isn't really wrong.

He will break quests by clearing dungeons if he didn't pick up the quest leading to that dungeon prior to entering it. It happens all the time to me. Makes exploring annoying when it should be awesome. One can only hope for a patch but I seriously doubt it'll ever be fixed.

If you load up the game and proceed to roll your face across the keyboard and chew on your mouse then yes I would say you are playing the game wrong. But then again who am I to say it's wrong if you're having fun right?

If anything he is doing it right. What I consider to be right anyway, he is exploring the game and developing his character. It means more to me when I accomplish somthng with a well developed character.

I don't understand when people run through every main quest line in 40 hours with one character and call it quits. They missed 80% of the game by doing that.

However, there are more technical ways to fail at playing this game. Most of what we are saying are just opinions on how we feel our play style for TES is the correct way to play :P

...And more power to him, if he enjoys the game he should play as he wishes... But could this theoretically catch up to him and in fact ruin the game?

Or did bethedia do such a good with scripting events that this will not/could not possible happen?

that's what and how Beth designed this game for, freedom. there's nothing wrong.
the only wrong things is broken quests, some of the quest will only work properly after you started the quest then only you should explore the zone.

There several times when I was adventuring when I basic cancelled a quest that some insist on calling `broken` and the game carries on.

In fact, the game shows you sometimes that you cancelled a quest. For instance, (without giving anything away), I went into a dungeon and wiped it out. There was a main guy in there with a particular name. He had some object that may or may not be important- I took it anyway.

Later, much later, I was talking to a Taverner in some far place and he mentioned a problem he had with some guy who took his stuff. he asked me to go and fetch this thing for him and he would pay.

Then a NEW speech option for me came up that said, "Wait. Is it THIS item you lost?" And the Taverner was happy and took it straight away.

This is what I mean the quest can be cancelled, but NOT broken.

Now how does one break a quest... I imagine.. you have item X before they tell you to get that item....

Walk up to them, they say find item X....
You keep clicking and it gives you option to give item...
they say Oh you found it!!! Here is your reward...

Do some quests not do this if they become broken?

That is how it is supposed to work, and that is what usually happens. Unfortunately there are quite a few bugs in a game as large and complex as Skyrim.

I encountered such a bug in the companions questline that stopped that questline cold and left Jorrvasker a complete mess with me being unable to meaningfully interact with any of the members. The reason was I had cleaned out a certain dungeon and had not waited 30 days for it to respawn. The companions quest I was supposed to get sent you to the same location, but the boss was dead and the game is supposed to send you somewhere else, but it got confused and jsut held the companions questline in limbo. I had to reload a prior save, wait 30 days and then go back to Jorrvaskar and try to reinitiate the quest. It worked, and I moved on from there.

The UESP does not have a comprehensive list of them unfortunately. If you want to know if a quest is bugged you have to go to the page for that quest and wade through the spoilers. The 1.4 patch is supposed to clean up a bunch of quest bugs. But until it is play tested by millions of people we won't know how successful they were and how many bugs persist.

Save often and keep a good selection of prior saves. That way if you run into trouble, you can reload a prior save and figure out how to avoid the problem with an online reference like UESP.
