I like combat in this game

But that's just it. Locking on IS how you move around someone in a real fight. You just instinctively follow their movements, you circle each other. To me, constantly having to maneuver your character so you don't run past the guy you're trying to fight might be harder, but it's also far more unrealistic, because that's not how people move when they're "locked in" combat. I love hard combat, but I want it hard because of the realism involved, not because of a poor game mechanic. If you were watching a Skyrim-like fight unfold in real life, you would think the combatants were probably mentally challenged or partially blind.
AHHH I see.... you may have a very good point. I wouldn't want a visual lock-on cursor but I could see how the game would lock two people fighting so they circle like real fights do. The problem I'm imagining is fighting more than one baddie.

Yes, as long as there were NO curser, this would be okay. Drakon: The Ancient Gates has this option and it works okay but the curser is annoying. Also, I am not sure I would want a lock on for ranged combat. Jsut makes hitting things with bows too easy, but I could see it for melee. Maybe make the lock on option somethign you can disable in the options menu. There are a lot of features being discussed on these boards that could easily be a toggle feature in the options mene to make the game more fun for some without affecting others.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, for melee only, not ranged. I hate to keep bringing up "Witcher 2," but I really do prefer that combat system. The lock-on there worked beautifully, but you could quickly and easily jump out of it if you were fighting multiple guys OR toggle between opponents you wanted to lock on to. I used it probably 50-60 percent of the time in that game, but I ALWAYS used it when I was fighting one opponent. Made things much more fun.

Why not? Do you not think facing all those Draugr would be a difficult fight, requiring tactics and thinking? To me it is realistic.
Not really. I have a level 56 Dark Elf and a Vampire sword, svcks health, and I wander through piles of Deathlords and some Overlords in every dungeon. If it gets really hectic I will drop a Dremora, from the Sanguine Rose, but I'm considerably tougher and more deadly than him. The health svck is very powerful in combat.

I may need to check out this "Witcher 2" you speak of, as I hear it will be coming to the Xbox next month.

I like it, but think the little delay on the controls really hurts it in the sense of moving. It feels good for attacks but when you're tryin to dodge you want your guy moving when you press the button not a couple secs later you know what I'm sayin. I can't tell if its intentional though, seems like its trying to simulate reaction time. Thing is though it doesn't need to be u know cause you're still a person

You really should. It's a fantastic game - much more story-driven than Elder Scrolls and more linear, but incredibly well made and gritty. Hopefully not playing the first won't hinder your enjoyment too much.

After playing a mage first time through, I'm a little clumsy with the combat. In first person, I can't follow where the enemy is going, and in third I miss a lot and can't seem to block at the right time. Maybe I just need practice.

I had the same issue, but after playing with my sword-n-board (well, technically mace/shield) cleric for 18 levels it's getting easier. For me, what helped was forgetting about trying to time the right moment to block- instead, keep your shield up by default. Then, I look for the right moment to strike. With a vengeance! I love the slow time perk too, letting me dodge (or bash down) a foe's power attack. I'm plain surprised at how much dang fun it is to use a shield! When I unlock Power Bash it will be even more fun! This character is on my Xbox (my others are on PC) and maybe it's something to do with the controller, but I have a blast during combat with my little priestess. I have a 2-hand warrior on PC and though she does block/parry with her Skyforge Greatsword, it's nowhere near as satisfying as the shield.

shield + 1hand is definetely the most intense style of combat to me.

through permanent bashing the game can become incredibly easy on all modes though, because you can just permablock and only do some hits after staggering the enemy. this means that you take almost no dmg and only realize mode switches by the amount of time a fight lasts.

Eh, I never used the lock on in Witcher 2 so the way the targeting works Geralt would sometimes leap away from the target I intended to hit who was standing right in front of him. It isn't intuitive to me, it's fussy and not as visually smooth or exciting as TW1. I used to like watching Geralt do his thing. Not so much in the sequel. I love Witcher 2 for the story, but disliked almost everything gameplay wise.
