I do prefer the Oblivion way, but I've now got used to the Skyrim way. It would be annoying getting used to another way of aiming now. :dry:

so arrows now do less damage?

Or arrows don't fly as far?

I really don't get the difference.

I noticed this change too when first playing skyrim. In oblivion/morrowind you'd aim in the direct you want to fire the arrow, where as in skyrim you aim where you intend to hit. I actually prefer the "real" way of shooting, aka oblivion/morrowind, but I guess using skyrims way has just made me too lazy to change it :P.

None of this really makes any difference to me and has nothing to do with how bows work IRL. You don't have crosshairs IRL and you don't aim off the tip of the arrow either. Traditional archery, i.e. a wooden bow with a string and no other devices, is all intuitive. You fix your gaze at the target and then you intuitively adjust your aim. Play without the crosshairs and you'll see that these changes don't make a difference. In fact, the Skyrim Vanilla settings might be closest to IRL as at short distance you'll have to aim much lower than your "crosshairs" in order to not overshoot your target, and vice versa at long distance.

The only thing that bothers me is that the arrows seem to disappear once they hit a certain range, thus not hitting anything at all even though my aim is on. Not sure if that's just my game, though.

In skyrim your arrows fire independantly from how the bow is angled, which is why it's further from RL imo. anyway, it's not just your game, for some reason the game is designed like this. You can get around it by doing some changes to the .ini file if you're in PC

I'm on PC. Are there any changes for the long range issue?

I didn't say the distance arrows fly, I said the distance in which the crosshair is spot on. :wink:

And I think of something different, when you say "that firing a bow is less like firing a gun".

//edit

I only see merit in this change, if you hide your crosshait at all times and fire by the tip of your arrow. Which would be the most realistic way. ^^

Hm, I might try that one, so I need to thank you after all, for bringing this tweak to my attention.
If you would try that in real life you would likely miss everytime, that's not how to aim with a Bow. Just saying. I can hear my dad yelling at me all over again... "you're doing it wrong!!" :slap:

I never fired a bow in real life (something I redeem myself to change eventually ^^), so I don't know how it is in real life. It just made a bit of sense to me, which I suppose I need to think about again, and the point I wanted to bring across was: Simply having a crosshair is what makes this an unnecessary change to me. ^^

Absolutely, I'm afraid i actually don't know the exact thing to do, but I just remember because I did it myself recently. If you check on the topics I've made in recent history under my profile , there should be one called "increased arrow range?"

Actually in the link Phon posted on page 1 the line to change the range of arrows is also mentioned.
