why is alchemy so useless in skyrim?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:22 am

I just don't understand the point of alchemy in skyrim. I used it all the time in Oblivion, but in Skyrim it's just pointless. you can't make potions that are even remotely as strong as the purchased potions and elixirs on the xbox version of the game. Is Bethesda going to correct this or should alchemy just be avoided and potion purchased from vendors?
lolwut

Someone hasn't gotten very far in alchemy skill.

Alchemy has been one of my favorite skills since I started playing TES games with Morrowind. I use it on a majority of my characters. I have never found it useless. It might take a while to get the magnitude/duraion up to decent levels, depending on what you are making, but its far from useless.

sure you can make poisons and potions stronger than the weakest ones you can buy, but seriously. no ultimate potions, no heavy duty poisons. for instance you can buy a potion for fortify enchantment at 25% gain but with every point in alchemy filled the best you can make is 15% maybe 20% if you mill that and fortify alchemy. so why would i bother when i can just go buy better?

Alchemy is useless? These threads always get slammed. It is to Skyrim what Magic was to Oblivion. The single most powerful skill in the game.

Need more H, M and/or S. - make a pot
Need a skill raised - make a pot
Need to inflict more damage - make a pot
Need more protection - make a pot
Need to become invisible - make a pot
Need more money - make a pot

I'd say that's pretty damn useful.

I wouldn't say its useless, I use it to make health and stamina potions all the time.

You're using the skill wrong, obviously.

The ONLY thing that's weak about alchemy are the poisons--with the exception of paralyze + Anything. Oh, and Slow too; that's saved my character's lives on more than one occasion. And I guess Frenzy and Fear are pretty dang effective too... I guess I'm complaining about the straight up Damage Health poisons. They svck. I remember putting 2 virulent poisons in Narfi the Beggars backpocket only to see his health get diminished by about 60%. But other than that, Alchemy is awesome.

Not that I'm thinking about this I need to remember to put a Frenzy potion in Nazeem's back pocket. I always mean to do that but always forget. And I think that says it all. When you can get Nazeem to basically commit suicide, you know that Alchemy kicks ass.

I prefer damage health with lingering damage health (imp stool + mora tapinella + skeever tail, for example) useful when attacking dragons with bows. For melee combat i use slow + damage health (deathbell + skeever tail + salt pile, for example).

One of my favorites is the paraylze and lingerering damage health, I think it is river belly, canis root and imp stool.

Yeah i have to agree with this, I picked the "poisoned" perk just for this purpose and found the damage health poisons to be a bit weak. But I just used the fortify restoration exploit to make some powerfull assassin potions.

The two most useful potions and poisons I've come across are the following:

Potion of Fortify Enchanting 379%: Allows you to enchant Fortify X school of magic to get your magic cost reduction exactly at 100% with a greater soul gem. With Twin Enchantments you can cast any spell in the game for free, which can lead to having a lot of fun.

The other is the paralysis poison, because you are guaranteed success in stealing whatever you want with it. I used it to keep a certain character alive and still get his one of a kind clothes. Very nice.

It was an experiment for me. I wanted to see how you much you'd have to raise your alchemy via the Fortify Restoration Glitch to get the magic reduction cost to exactly 100%. Unfortunately, I don't remember the fortify alchemy increase you need to get it at for this to be available, but it took me about 3 hours to get it right.

Alchemy is imho the very best way to make money and game breakingly powerful. If you dont have spellbreaker, how do you beat the black star without fire resist? Or should i start a thread? Lol.

One thing I miss in Oblivion was making poisons with two types of damage, such as damage health and fire damage. Now you've just got damage health.
Me too! When I first started Skyrim I kept wandering around looking for ingredients that gave fire/frost damage until I realised that they discontinued it....then I got sad...TT
