why is alchemy so useless in skyrim?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:25 pm

I just don't understand the point of alchemy in skyrim. I used it all the time in Oblivion, but in Skyrim it's just pointless. you can't make potions that are even remotely as strong as the purchased potions and elixirs on the xbox version of the game. Is Bethesda going to correct this or should alchemy just be avoided and potion purchased from vendors?

Alchemy has limited uses. It's good for poisons and potions, but it's main attraction is to break the game with fortify restoration/enchanting etc. or to just make money. Having 100+ pots of restore magicka isn't all that bad.

Actually, it's main attraction is to make destruction viable endgame.

Are you serious??? The potions you can make are WAYYYYY stronger than the ones ingame, besides the "Ultimate healing" and the like. Also money. Buy all of vendors ingredients, make potions, sell potions. Unlimited money right there. Damage potions also can more than double your damage.

How can a pure mage do that? I don't use any weapons and I can't poison my fists(sadly)

Fortify destruction damage. And alchemy was always a magic skill before Skyrim, so you should still feel free to use it on a mage. I mean you are getting magical properties out of the ingredients.

Go back to the alchemy lab after spending a few perks in alchemy and try again.
Alchemy in Skyrim is one of the most powerfull skills in the game, just like it was in Oblivion.
You just have to get good at it first and spend perks in it.

Poisons have saved my character's life more times than I count. Alchemy has also enabled my character to make lots of gold to spend. My character also enjoys it as a hobby.

The skill may be under "The Thief", but Fortify Destruction as an effect is intense. And much like Destruction is the most "War Like" Magic skill, Alchemy is the most "Magic Like" Thief skill.

Weakness to Magic poisons are also exceptional for Mages, and since poison can be applied to Bound weapons, I see no conflict.

First off, you're new to the forum, so welcome and have a fishy stick: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Fishy_Stick

BTW, that website is the best for all things Skyrim. Use their search box - outstanding results, also read the first page for more things to help you out.

Now, take a real close look at those potions.

There are potions that increase your smithing ability - So, with a high level smithing ability, the potions increases your smithing abilities even further. Results: Better armor and weapons.

There are potions that increase the duration/damage of spells.

My assassin would love some of those invisibility potions that last one minute - the 20-second potions are kind of useless while she's out on a job.

I think there are potions that increase the length and/or damage of spells - nice to have as a mage.

That's about all I remember. I don't take alchemy, but it's not useless.

Good luck.
