Quickbar please - 8 hotkeys not enough!

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:13 pm

Yeah, I gotta admit having only 2 hotkeys on Xbox blows.

I got used to hotkeying all my commonly used spells in Oblivion and going from that to having 2 hotkeys or having to scroll through the favorites menu constantly in the middle of a conflict is kinda anti-climatic.

Two hotkeys and happy with it? Thank the nine this won't ever (again) be a http://members.tacticalgamer.com/~strag/arma/armacontrols2vh3.jpg, and that's just one "family" on controls, as the controls themselves are kinda context sensitive. Control complexity is a major reason that game won't make it to consoles - they tried once, but wasn't too successful. On the PC platform, it's very successful taking its niche target into account (realism rather than streamlining). TES niche approach ended with Daggerfall :(

Ignorance is truly bliss. That's like saying "I'm driving a Lada and I'm happy with it" - maybe you are, but that doesn't mean there aren't better ways. I want complexity back into the game, which often tend to complexify the controls as well - that kind of attitude makes sure it will never happen.

I absolutely want more hotkeys for this game. You should be able to assign any key you want as a hotkey and there should be modifier keys as well (e.g. alt or shift plus hotkey.) Being stuck with only the 1-8 number keys is so limiting and cumbersome for a spellcaster. I hope something like this is released in an update.

Complexity for the sake of complexity is stupid.

Two hot keys works but 4 or 8 would be ample. You don't need a thousand hot keys to play. You just need to make up your damned mind.

Dual wield hotkeys would be nice.

I think this is a textbook example of the phrase "Ignorance is bliss."

You have two hotkeys and your happy, but likely only because you don't know what it's like to have 8 or more hotkeys.
He knows what it's like, if he play TES IV on a console. Why they went from EIGHT hockeys to two semi broken ones is beyond me. I guess so they could show off that new sweet Mac interface??

bwaha, I wish they had something like this for xbox, too. It's a pain scrolling through ALL favorited items (weapons / amulets / potions / don't even bother with scrolls thanks to this ... ) AND favorited spells (powers / shouts / every school of magic .. ) the list gets pretty long, especially playing a mage. shoot, normally I play an assassin or a warrior, and even then the one and only list can get too long.

What would be so hard about having 2 or even 4 favorite lists you could activate separately with each cross button direction? up and down both work to trigger the same list, why not 2 different lists? feh!

No need to be PC elitists. I have the PC version as well as the Xbox version, and I find the controls with a controller far preferable to a keyboard.

Of course you do. Skyrim's controls were made with a console controller in mind, not a mouse and keyboard. The result? Playing Skyrim on keyboard and mouse blows chunks, compared to what PC players are used to when the controls are done *right*.

The controls are done right, hence Bethesda's lean toward controllers.

It's kind of hilarious, in a sad sort of way- they went out of their way trying to make Skyrim a console-centric game, screwing up the PC controls horribly in the process, but didn't even manage to do a good job of the console controller scheme, either. Probably because they are new to that kind of stuff (was Oblivion ported to consoles? Can't remember).

Hmm, seem to be plenty of other console players not quite as in love with how the controller setup in Skryim works, as you are.

I always wanted more hotkeys when I played these games on PC. Not so much with Melee classes but for mages it's really hard without more keys. I'm on Console for this one and that is one of the things I really don't like. Again it was ok with my warrior and thief but for my two mages I'm in the pause menu constantly and it's not a good pause menu either. It could have been a lot smoother. I'd much prefer some kind of wheel interface for selecting spells on the fly. I'm now hoping the Kinect voice thing will make things better. It looks promising so far. But I do wish the console controllers had more buttons for games like this. Not everyone feels that 2 hot keys are perfectly fine.

ps3 - basically no hotkeys cause the two we have are f*ing broke.

stupid favorites menu is stupid.

can we please have the d-pad hotkeys back?

for extra credit allowing complete loadouts per hotkey would be extra fancy.

Stalker is pure PC and I can map almost every key and my entire trackball, which has a lot of buttons. There are a couple that don't work but it's nice to be able to effortlessly call up any of the many functions and things a complex FPS/RPG has available. Skyrim is pretty limited.

If we are talking about the console, I'd rather have the weapon switch delay be fixed. If it was gone I could deal with two hotkeys.

I don't have any problem with way it is now, but more hotkeys will be added for Xbox users with Kinect.

Guess it's a playstyle thing - I've been playing PC games for decades, too.... and I've still got no idea what people do with all those quickbars and/or how they keep track of them all.

Obviously I can't speak for others, but I tend to key up something like this for a physical fighter:

1) Weapon one. Usually for a max damage melee weapon
2) Weapon two: A reserve weapon in case of a draugr shouting my main weapon out of my hand. This is also usually the soul-trap weapon.
3) Ranged weapon or spell
4) I've taken to using this as a shield select, as I tend to spell with the left for melee builds. Can also be a cloak/ward if playing a caster.
5) Main healing spell
6) Sneak/muffle spell
7) Varies from game to game and onplay style, but usually a spell or shout
8) A spell to provide light, or a torch.

Thats for a melee fighter. There are variations, but I try to keep to something similar so I know what every hot key probably does. Yes, I could use the pause and menu, but I find it immersion breaking. Personally I'd like at least two more hot heys, or better yet, four. Playing caters in particular I'd like a lot more spells hot-keyed. The only time I have no issue with the available number is if I'm RPing a 2H pure melee character whgo never uses magic.

OF:This turned into a Console Vs PC war very quickly, why I love the forums, hahah. NerdWars are funny.

I think the Favourites quick-select is awesome, you just don't have to a lazy ass, and actually sort it out, keep only the MOST IMPORTANT Items in there.

(Even in WoW, I don't really use beyond the basic 1-9, I click everything else. Doing the whole "ctrl-alt-shift-F5 to use Esoteric Skill #43" thing has always been beyond me.)
So much this!

Quick question: how do you guys memorize every single hotkey and do you really use them all?

Yeah, Oblivion was on 360, and even Morrowind was on the original Xbox, I believe. Plus, Bethesda was responsible for Fallout 3, which is essentially the same type of game engine, which also did well on 360.

The list is new - they used to do custom hot key slots attached to any of the 8 compass directions on your cross pad. That had its problems as well - the NE/NW/SW/SE buttons don't fire very accurately, in my experience, and it's only limited to 8 instead of a relatively unlimited list. I think I prefer the 1 list to the 8 buttons - but come on, meet somewhere in the middle with that, please! :P

It would not have been difficult to map one direction to the favorites list, and allow the other seven be mapped like OB, MW, FO, FONV

The favorites menu is a nightmare becuase it pauses the game, I don't want to pause my game every time to switch a spell. svcks to play as a mage now (on console) for this reason alone.
