Is there a way to 'relabel' a save?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:09 pm

I have run two characters at this point. If I ever want to resume using a particular character, I can remember what the last saved file was. However, this also prevents me from heavily experimenting with new characters, because I just KNOW that I won't be able to keep track of many different characters and their last saved files.

Is it possible to save a file and rename it either before or after saving? In other words, if a saved file was 'save 345', could I instead name it as 'last dunmer thief/assassin save'?

Please help. :-)

Are you on PC? If you're on PC you can go to My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Saves, right-click on the file, select 'Rename' and type in a new name. I don't know how you would go about doing it on an XBox or PS3.

If you are on PC you can open the console and write "save XXXXXX" where X is the name of the given file by you (ignore the ")

If you are not on a pc, you could try switching to third person, and moving the camera angle so you can see your character.... Not perfect, but....

It might be tool late for this now, but there is a way to use the character name for the save, I did not come up with this:

if you put a comma in your character's name, the save name will be everything after the comma.

I had an Orc named Ghom, Son of Frow... so all his saves are listed as "Son of Frow"

I started a new High Elf to check, and named him Kel, Mage of Summerset... his saves show up "Mage of Summerset"

Finally, I made an Argonian and just named him ", Bob"... sure enough, her saves are all named "Bob" (followed by the location & I assume number... can't see the whole thing)

...So, just a tip, if you want your savegame names to differentiate between your characters, put a comma in there, followed by something to identify the savegame.

That's a pretty sweet find. lol

When I start a new character I'll definitely try this. :D

Nice to know. Thanks. By the way, do you need a space after the comma or would ,Bob work? I will have to try it.

Though I don't know if I would want a comma in my name, but it's a good tip. Speaking of names, I can't for the life of me, get a damn ' (apostrophe) in my name. Kind of makes me mad as I can put a semicolon, but no apostrophe. Who needs a damn semicolon in their name?! (I'm on PC)

Wish they would allow you to name your saves like in MW, but I guess it would be hard for consolers to do. But they could have kept the default one they use now, but in a window where you have the option to rename. Guess that's just wishful thinking.

I don't think the comma shows up for the name in the game, just the save listing.

We could name saves on the Xbox in Morrowind. It was not that hard IIRC, a bit tedious, but at least the name of the save was suggested for you based on the name of the save that was loaded.

It's a pity though, since I'm pretty sure I was able to name my saves even in Daggerfall. This is one of the times when I agree with how "consolification" is a bad thing and is indeed happening.

Well, I'm planning on starting another Assassin tonight when I get home (my DiD game was going great... until my character died.), so I think I'll try this out and stick a small coma in front of his name at character creation. See what that does for me. ;)

Odd. I just tried this on a new character. Named him ", Cervanos Grey-Eyes" and the save still listed "Skyrim" as I saved just after creating him. Hmm. Did I do something wrong?

yes, the syntax is:

Name of Character, Description of Character

So:

George, Mage

Red, Bloody Scourge of Skyrim

You put the comma first, so there was nothing to the left of the comma for the game to use as a name.

Got it now. Saw the underlined/bold part your previous post and was confused. Thanks for the correction, I will try it.

So if I name a character "Fenrir, Mage"...would my name in-game be considered " Fenrir " | " Fenrir, " | or " Fenrir, Mage " ? I'm willing to give this a try if it truely names saves. I have so many characters, I hope this is possible!

Ok, so I tried it again. This time I typed in: Oelrich, Battle Conjurer

Nothing. My saves are still just named 1856 Skyrim or whatever. I'm either not getting it or it just isn't working on my PC.
