Necromancer character

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:09 pm

I'm getting ready to start a new Necromancer character and would like some input on some things.

First I will be a Breton,they seem like a good race for this,and I haven't played a Breton in a while.

Ok my main focus is on reanimating corpses so all the necromancer perks in the conjuration tree are imperative.

I will use alteration for the mage armor and was thinking of perking it heavily, but here's my first question.
With the Bretons resistance to magic and the other magick alteration resistance perks over ride the 30% absorb magick from the atronach perk?
Basically wich gets calculated first resist magick or absorb magick?

My real dilemna though comes from the need to have fresh corpses to reanimate.
When traveling, very rarely,if ever do you have a convenient corpse near by to reanimate,so I will need a way to make one.

I have two thoughts on this:
1 is with illusion, frenzy spells or calm spells wich I can then conjure a weapon to help finsh them off or

2 is with destruction magick, mostly frost spells as cold sounds very necromancy to me.

If I go with the frost spells I am a little conserened with the fact that so many creatures and draugr have a resistance to it.
What are your thoughts here?Would the necromage perk from restoration come to late in game play to be really usefull or will I just be weak against these enemies?

Or if you can come up with a way to put fire in a necrmacer build?

Just looking for any thoughts you all might have.

Ok I just found on the uesp that absorb magick is calculated before magick resistance,so I found an answer to my first question.

There's a YouTube video out there of a guy who made a character using only necromancy and frost spells - he only perked Conjuration and Destruction. Seemed to work out well for him, anyway. But I haven't tried it myself.

That Youtube build also has a lot of perks left over, so you can have your Alteration perks too. I'm not sure but I've heard that a Necromancy-based character can lead to a lot of bugs and such, I've stayed away from it for this reason.

I didn't have too many problems with my Necromancer, though he was also using heavy armor and dual bound swords so corpses were not a big issue.

I only had slight issues with zombie AI. Sometimes it seemed like they wouldn't follow or problems with them turning to ash when going thru doors w/ load screen. I think others have had more problems but in the end it was a fun build for me.

I think the bugs were ash piles causing save file bloat, enemies from respawned areas resisting reanimation, what mes said, and the spell having an insanely long duration without having anything reanimated causing everyone act like you're casting magic infront of them.

My Necromancer build is more of a Shadow Knight - One Handed (Dual Wield), Heavy Armor, Conjuration, Enchanting, Illusion, Alteration, Restoration, Smithing. Stone is the Ritual Stone.

You have a lot of stuff going on there, quite different then what I'm aiming for,but looks good.
The ritual stone is on my get it soon list.

I just entered bleak falls barrow armed with the basic frost and healing spell, along with oak flesh, summon zombie&familiar.
So far no problem with the frost and reanimate spells but this is where my first test comes,we'll see what happens next.

Yea, I'm definitely not playing a traditional necromancer. I'm in a phase right now where I want to play big, menacing tank style characters, but I absolutely love necromancy and dark magic in RPG's, so I combined the 2.

Like I said, I think that video is a good "pure necromancer" guide. He's real slim on perks, only the necromancy perks in Conjuration, and the frost perks in Destruction.

Something that I stumbled upon, however, is if you want to be a "pure" necromancer, I noticed you were mentioning Illusion magic up above. I don't know how "pure" you want to remain, but a real good strategy that I stumbled upon - use Calm so that your target doesn't aggro on you. Sneak up on him, kill him silently, and bam, you have yourself fresh material for a corpse.

Also, Fury + Conjure Familiar can be a nice little combo as well to get you some corpse material in the early goings, if there are groups and you can't necessarily isolate.

Meh, necromancy although interesting, isnt that fun. corpse takes forever to slowly rise up and make sense of its surroundings. Anyway, i think illusion and necromancy would work quite well  First you gotta fight your buddy, then you gotta fight his undead form again...ouch. Talk about psychological trauma.

Edit: Forgot that most of skyrim's dungeons are filled with emotionless entities such as bandits draugrs and falmer.

^ I do agree zombie raising is slow, and once they are raised, the AI on them can be god awful at times.

I still love me some necromancy tho.
