My suggestion to how the follower system could be more interesting would be if "leadership" became a skill. "Leadership" would be about leading your followers (obviously), and the better you are at leading the more perks and benefits you could get from having followers.
It's obvious that some people are better than others at being a leader. For example; characters like Shepherd in Mass Effect are natural leaders while some characters are the more lone-wolf type. Therefore, it makes sense that one character in Skyrim should be better than another at leading.
You could level up "Leadership" by having followers around you and let them fight in your battles or giving them commands. Some perks/benefits that you would unlock as you level up could be for example:
*The ability to have multiple followers at once (begins with 1, then goes up to 2, 3 and 4)
* The ability to train your follower (providing that you already have a high level at the skill you are going to teach)
* The ability to give commands in battle (by pressing a button you could enter the "command wheel" where you can choose commands like "attack my target", "defend this position", "change combat style" and more)
*The ability to choose what your follower will wear/use (even if it's worse than the follower is currently using and even if the follower isn't following you at the moment)
and so on
