Things Skyrim Got Right

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:31 am

Ok, there are soooo many posts about all the flaws of this game and things Bethesda didn't do right or things they should have done, etc. And while I think it's important for Bethesda to know where to improve, it's just as important for them to know what we like about their game (I think :P).

So, here's a thread where we can post everything we think Bethesda got right in Skyrim and all the positives about it. Hopefully the devs read these threads but even if they don't it'll be interesting to see what people really enjoy about the game rather than just hating on it :D

Archery... sneaking... I do not not care what people say archery and sneaking were both horrible in Morrowind and Oblivion... I think they finally got Character and Creature models great too... Just compare them to Oblivion...

Physics. It never ceases to amaze me how good physics are in this game.

Archery. I hated it in previous games, and now love it. The fact that the world feels big and old.

I'll prolly get shouted at for saying this... combat.

I think the combat in 1st person feels awesome.
I always thought of western medieval melee combat as being a rather inelegant, brutal affair.
Big heavy weapons clashing off each other and smashing (even the swords) into armour, hard brutal crushing blows.

You just sort of slash and smash the heck out of each other until somebody drops, it's quick, it's messy and it's desperate.
I love how chaotic my screen looks when fighting multiple opponents in 1st person while still maintaining my focus on what's actually going on.

I love coming around a corner or w/e and 5 dudes spot you, stand up and draw their weapons in unison, the sound of my own sword leaving the sheathe, the rush as we close the distance to each other and the glorious maelstrom of hacking and slashing that ensues.

Heads rolling and taunts and shouts filling the air.
The game mixes it up really nice, so if you fight 5 guys, one will go down in two quick strikes, the other gets his head chopped off in one, the next goes down with a killcam showing you impaling him through the back and so on.
The variety is added to now we're able to ride a horse into those 5 guys and dispatch a couple before dismounting and getting up close and personal.

I love the circling and testing in a one on one fight, the little pauses in the action as the opponent seems to be looking for opening.
The little animations enemies have like banging the sword and shield together as a sort of taunt (I wish I could do that).

So yeah, I think they did a great job on the combat, I certainly enjoy it a lot.

Enviroment, atmosphere, culture, history, overall design of the world.
The look of the races are hundreds of times better than OB's, and the best to date.
And the look of the equipment is a worthy mention.

yeah the atmosphere is really good and the hand crafted dungeons and little "easter egg" locations outside and untold stories are one of the best parts

Character models and animations are the best of the series yet. Also, Bethesda has been listening to the fans, and been incredibly supportive proceeding launch, more so than they had with any previous game.

The amount of detail and storybook creation is phenomenial. But it is like creating a fantastic fantasy novel and not using spell checkand proofing-hence all of the "bugs." By the way, does this Reply Area not have spell check?
I'm not much into the black and white world of the snow but I like just wandering in the sunshine of the daylight wooded areas. Sometimes coming upon enemies and other times enjoying the secenery and non threating animals.

There were two threads. the best things in skyrim and the worst things in skyrim. The latter was more popular.

Wow, this would be a big list. What would the highlights for me be...
  • Sandbox: This right here is the biggest thing for me. In an era where even MMORPG's are looking more like just the roller coaster part in the themepark, its good to find a game that actually feels "open."
  • History: Skyrim looks like people have lived there for a long time. Everything looks "weathered" at the least. Even the weapons and armor look like actually been used, instead of being locked in a display case from the moment they were made.
  • Alive: Skyrim isn't just about "you." Yes you have your own dragonborn story, but you also have the Civil War, Forsworn, Blades, Dark Brotherhood, Winterhold, Companions, etc, etc... Quest lines that you can choose to take part in or not. You feel like you are part of an ongoing story, not "the" story.
  • Natural: I've spent hours just riding around Skyrim. Ignoring whoever or whatever is trying to ambush me at the moment and just enjoying the beauty of the landscape.
  • Variety: While I would always like more, there is a lot of different gear in Skyrim. It lets you go a long way towards giving your character its own "look."
  • Classless: Thought it may cause problems not being spec'd right. Skyrim does a surprisingly good job on letting you develop your character the way you want to through actually using the skills you want too. Sneak more? You'll get better at sneaking and get the option to improve it even more.
  • Changeable: Allowing your community to change or add things to a game adds a lot to a game's longevity and flexibility.
While that is hardly a complete list of what Skyrim got right, in my opinion. Those are the highlights.
