What I would like to see regarding a vampire perk tree

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:32 pm

I've been looking at few threads on the topic of whether or not the new vampire lord form should receive a perk tree and so far I've noticed a few problems with implementing a perk tree similar to ones we have now.

Namely:
-The cost of selecting a perk(1 perk per level up)
-Risk of being overpowered/underpowered compared to other perk trees
- Potential lack of interesting/unique perks

My solution to this problem? Easy. It's already got an example to follow on.

For those who played the game Fallout: New Vegas, there were very subtle perks that you earned as you progressed through the game, for example the "Set Lasers for Fun" perk, which let players earn a percentage increase in critical hit chance after reaching a set amount of damage with energy weapons. And the Increases were incremental, small increases, that required time to obtain.

I propose something similar be introduced for the new vampire lord. The perks would provide a subtle, yet steady increase in power, and let players feel progression in their vampire form, without being forced to spend precious perk points in a form they may wish to cure later. In the time i've had to consider it, things like "kill x amount of humanoid enemies in melee combat for x% increase in melee damage" and similar things for players who favor magic or stealth.
So what do you guys think? Would you like a perk system like this for vampirism? Or would you prefer a more traditional perk tree? Or perhaps, none at all?

I think this is a great idea. A perk tree would create problems (like you said, what if someone wants a cure?) but would be useful.
I just hope that being a vampire lord caters to all play styles.

I too was wondering about perks and losing points after a cure, well the best solution Ive found is, an extra perk point for each level you increase being a vampire, to be spent onto the vamp perk tree, if you ever cure yourself, you lose the vamp perks but don't touch the regular ones.

I'm confused a little, but I would say a form like Vampire Lord/Lady is an investment.

If people are that obsessed with point spending and wanting an option to back out with no consequence, then just make an independant save for the expansion.

Yeah I dunno, if they ever put a perk tree that just disappear once you cure yourself Id hardly put any point in there... I'm already lacking for my favorite skills, anyway... the vamp lord seems more like a faction ability, something like a daedric artifact but I understand the vanilla vampirism is shallow and must be implemented, particularly into the vamp powers(servant, seduction and drain life), on the late game they become completely useless.

I would suppose that they are perks unlocked for being a vampire/werewolf. Perhaps tied to a level or some sort of feeding meter...

Now back to lurking.

Feeding meter would be interesting but I'm betting on item based ability like the Namira's ring for exceptional powers, it is simpler and this system is already in the game. Of course an alternative strain of vampirism would provide different powers, maybe an enhanced vampirism that would suffice the late game... I believe this is a must.

I think any "Vampire Perk Tree" should be skilled up by Duration as a Vampire. Marking your transformation from Fledgling to Ancient. The result means that Vampires at their core, will become stronger than a non vampire character (Essentially raising the Level cap by a few levels), but the Vampire "Tree" Should still cost perk points to compensate, and allow "Specialty Vampires" to be created that synergize with other skills.

Passive perks like in New Vegas go against the character progression system of Skyrim and create a "No reason not to" scenario, that is anathema to even having a character progression system.

I hope we do. If we're going to be all powerful at night, it ought to have some pitfalls.

I like this idea; it almost goes in hand with the progression of sanguinare vampiris by gaining abilities over time.
