Sounds like something that happened to me, certain areas with fog effects/nirnroot effects bug out and duplicate to extremes, causing you to lock up/crash.

If you play on the Xbox360 and have an external HDD or any kind of external thing to transfer ur save file, copy it to there, download Modio, open the external with modio and go into Skyrim then select the save file *Savegame.dat* and extract it to your pc, send it to me and i'll open it on the PC version and i'll see if i can open it *since you can turn off all graphics ect*, also there are some mods that clean up the game *i do this with my save file if anything happens, or if i want to add items to the game that are in vanilla Skyrim but you cant get them, like the Psijic Order robes for eg ;D or use the console to fix bugged out quests* These mods do not add anything that the vanilla Skyrim has, so you wont have to worry about corruption, you can always make a backup of your file just incase.

That's illegal if you're on Xbox.

I cleaned out the chest in Whiterun. I'll wait a few in-game days to see if it did anything.

It isnt, what is illegal though is to hax the Xbox itself and other things i wont go into... Things that could get ur assed sued ;p but cleaning up save files is fine.
The only save game editing that could get you banned is say if it is an online multiplayer and you gave yourself infinite ammo/modded your health/basically anything that gave you a stupid advantage over other players, but since Skyrim is an offline rpg doing this is fine. All i do is open it up on the PC version, use the console commands to fix up bugged quests or port me to another area if im locking up in a fogged out area, or use mods to clean up corpses/glow/weapons/ash piles ect  Just make sure the PC version has no mods that add things into the game that are not in Vanilla and your fine, i have done this with multiple saves/characters and ive had no issues after on the console, if anything it stopped my crashing *unless im just getting lucky*

My mistake. I thought you meant something else.

:Tobuscus voice: Sweet lord. after cleaning out the chest in Breezehome, Lydia went into her own room
