I agree. The leveling system as a whole is an improvement, but it could have been done much better. Much better. And in the process things became shallow and watered down. This is seen in most aspects of the game, not just leveling. I hoped that Bethesda would take the things they did right with FO3 and the things Obsidian did right with New Vegas, and expand upon them in Skyrim, but I dont know...it really just feels shallow in certain respects. Anyway, sorry to derail the conversation. Back to the issue at hand.
I totally agree. They could have balanced the skill losses with racial bonuses (or even alternative skill trees for different races, akin to the Vamp and Lycan skill trees we're hearing about now). Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't keep more of the options from FO3. I was truly impressed with the leveling system and it seemed to have the best of both worlds. I didn't feel like I was spamming my traits to level, but also felt like I could really focus my character in different ways so when I played a different style I had a different experience. The perks were really fun, but you still had skill points to throw around based on your SPECIALs... Ah, nostalgia.
It's so weird, I have such a love-hate thing going on with Skyrim. There truly are lots of things I love about the game, but constantly find myself irritated with things that were dropped or overlooked for reasons that escape me. It svcks, cause I hate sounding like such a whiner/hipster.
