No lens flare is more realistic. A "Suspension of disbel

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:26 pm

First I must say that I live in Italy and that I'm sorry for my bad english becouse I didn't study english enough. I will try to explain.

After watching the presentation of the Unreal Engine 4 (wich use tons of lens flare) I remember what said my brother (who is a filmmaker in London).

He explain to me how the lens flare effect is considered a very bad error in the cinema movies. This is because the thing that makes the "lens flare" is the camera "lens" (is a piece of glass). If the people that are watching the movie understand that the scene is taken with a camera (because of the lens flare) they lost their "Suspension of disbelief". read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspension_of_disbelief

My brother for exemple say that they may be good for a musical video. But not for a movie (it is considered a very bad error).

I see that in Skyrim there is not this effect while looking at the sun, but there is a stunning hdr effect. I think this help us to preceive the opera as more realistic.

I hope Bethesda will continue in this way for the next gen. Bye!

p.s.

ot, I hope to see less violence from the fauna in the next Elder scoll for the same reason of "suspension of disbelief" (sorry I couldn't resist to ask) /ot. Bye!

Honestly I think lens flare can really help in certain circumstances. It adds an aesthetic to the image that you wouldn't see in real life. (You don't see lens flares standing the middle of a sunny street)

In fact, Adobe After Effects comes with an entire suite dedicated specifically to adding lens flares to video.

I agree that the more "realistic" approach that BGS takes with the graphics is great, as opposed to the pure whacky fantasy that most fantasy games go for. Though a well placed lens flare can certainly help, so I wouldn't exactly agree that it's an outright 'error'.

When I saw this thread, I thought it was going to be a poorly worded complaint about the lighting and dimming effect of looking towards and away, respectively, the sun. It's a pleasent surprise to see that I was wrong

Less violence from the fauna? As far as I've seen, a lot of the fauna seem to be protecting their territory. Wolves, especially, will stand their ground until you get too close or leave you alone if you move away from them

Oh, and your English is fine. Believe me when I say I've seen a lot worse.

When I look at the sun, I get a similar effect as the one in Skyrim. Everything darkens. I think the only reason we don't get lens flares in real life is because we don't have any lenses. Our eyes have something similar to a lens, but it is so thin it's completely unseeable but still protects the whole eye.

Yeah, as an actual Landscape/nature photographer, lens flare occur with your lens /and/ eyes.
Really, we're walking around with very valuable lens in our head, the camera is adapted to capture light and shapes just like our eyes.
Only difference is, you can lessen the flare on a camera, not so much with your eyes.
So personally, killing the flare is less realistic.

Look at the the left of the image, just about the line where it says "visual axis". It's a lense, and it doesn't protect the whole eye.

Lol lens flare is exactly what's in BF3 and it looks stupid. Just like the neutron star flashlight. I'm happy Bethesda didn't do anything that stupid.
