Why can't we do non-lethal disenchantments?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:21 am

I love the Thalmor Robes. They are pretty awesome! Unfortunately, they have a destruction ability. I want to remove it, but I don't want to destroy it! I want to put my own enchantment on it! Why is this not possible! Do it Bethesda!

PS while I am going on about Thalmor robes, are there any unenchanted versions anywhere?

Seconded. I want to be able to disenchant and re-enchant items. Perhaps having a system in place where you cannot learn an enchantment without destroying the item would suffice. That way, I can disenchant items I already know the enchantments for and apply my own enchantments, just for roleplaying's sake.

Or, they could just give us the possibility of overwriting enchantments as well.

That would be a good tradeoff! If you want to keep your item, you don't learn the ability if youj don't know it. Good suggestion!

Thanks. I mean, it only makes sense. If I don't destroy the item, then I cannot learn the very fabric of what makes up the enchantment. However, half the time I already know the enchantments, so I can't disenchant the item, putting me in limbo as far as applying new enchantments is concerned.

I like that idea though I wouldn't actually get much use out of it since I don't tend to use many of the clothing and such like that unless I'm just walking around town and wouldn't tend to need enchantments on it...

What I'm thinking is more like the special guild-related clothing. For example, I love the Thieves Guild armor, but if I were to apply it to my assassin character then it would be next to useless. I know, lore-wise, that that's what's supposed to happen (why would assassins use thieves' armor?) but I'd like to be able to enchant more assassin-friendly bonuses over my Thieves Guild armor, thus making it more viable for me to use while at the same time leveling up my enchanting.

I really do not know why this isn't how Enchanting is handled. Instead I have to pick up worthless crap and Petty Gems and Common/Lesser Gems to level up my Enchanting. It seems way more feasible to Enchant your worn gear and level up by overwriting enchants with greater effectiveness.

It should have been one of the top perks to not destroy items when disenchanting them.(This would also give you the ability to disenchant items more than the normal, once.)

The whole concept of disenchanting is bizarre to begin with. You basically cannot learn a new enchant only copy an existing one. It makes more sense to me that Disenchanting instead would be used as an alternative method to Soul Trapping targets to replenish Weapon Enchants. It is pretty silly that I have to find a weapon that has Soul Trap on it, Disenchant it, then put it on a weapon just so I can even level my enchanting to begin with unless I want to swap hands, cast a spell, swap back and kill the target.

Alternatively, Enchants would be learned through finding or buying recipes. I would have further added powerful unique Enchants that can be copied via Charcoal and Paper from Magic stones located throughout the world. These Enchants would provide dual effects or unique effects only found at these locations.

This would be such a great addition. So many items I would really like to use but because they have enchants on already they just aren't a good option.

Either that or make sure that a blank version of any unique looking item is available somewhere.

Like how you cna buy a non enchanted version of the novice hood. Why can't we buy a non enchanted version of the adpet hood? Why can't we buy an unenchanted version of the theives guild armor? Surely Tonilia would be capable of getting a version of the armor before it has its whack enchantments on it.

Or they could just keep it simple:
Destroy item learn enchant.
Destroy enchant keep item, item can be re-enchanted.

I really don't understand game developers sometimes.
