I recall the area outside Darkshade being very pretty down by the water, but I don't recall if there was enough flat ground for a house or not. That'd be north of Valtheim Towers.

Lake/pond near Riverwood is my ideal location with a mill and a smithy area.

Or near Riften by its lake but I like pines more then birches..
