Weather and Icy Water

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:52 am

Hi all,

I have been involved with some good discussion about the CK on these forums and had some help directly and indirectly for which I am grateful.

I have been practising making a new world space and come across two problems that I hope some of you folk will be nice enough to help me with.

1, Weather

My new world space is off map (game) and to the (north) top. So, as you may imagine, the world space is meant to be very cold with dreary weather. Thing is, the world space always has sunny weather through the day and pleasant weather at night! I have tried waiting over days to see if the weather alters - it does not

I would like to have the weather always be dreary with rain and or snow in the world space.

Is there an easy way to force such weather in the world space?

For further information my world space has the following;

Parent = Tamriel
Use Sky cell = checked
World offest data - set to offset worldspace from tamriel map
Small World = Checked

No other changes or revision of new world space data except the name.

I have done some searching online and in theses forums but not yet found a good answer to this.

2, Icy water

Because the new world space is set as being off the top / northern coast of Tamriel, I would like to make some of the sea surface to be icy or iced over. (I can easilly add icebergs! )

I thought maybe the icy water (ice on top of sea water) as seen in game may have been created with a world object or a world data water type maybe but have not found either - sometimes it is easy to miss something obvious!

I hope I do not have to start again because I failed to set something up correctly when creating the new world space but I suppose it would be a lesson learned if I did have to restart.

Thanks in advance for any constructive help.

I haven't been able to get custom worldspaces to even load in the local terrain of a parent area ON the Tamriel map. If you could enlighten me on how to get that to work, I'd be appeciative....

I woudl like to know too about the weather , but for the Icy water you just pick up ice items and put on sea , the Ice flats you are talking about are Frozenmarsh icy water ...

I take it you do the following:
  • Menu Bar>World>World Spaces
  • Right Click in listed world spaces > select new
  • New Form Editor ID>Enter 'YourWorldNameHere'
  • Name>'YourWorldName'
  • Parent Worldspace>Tamriel
Then Set Sharable Data and the other options. Then Press OK to verify. Then SAVE!

With your world selected from drop down menu (Cell View>World Spaces), you then see a water but no land / terrain?

If that assumption is correct, then do this:

Menu Bar>View>Show/Hide Window
Show/Hiide>Terrain is checked

I had a mega problem with this after a recent CK update where the Show/Hide>Terrain was always unchecked at launch and did not alter Render Window view when changed! I reinstalled CK and it fixed the issue. 'F5' Redraws the render window too.

Frozenmarsh icy water - thank you so much - it was driving me crazy - I just knew it had to be something simple! :)

Also - an update on the weather;

It's snowing here IRL - LOL

Seriously though;

I have had a bit of a result with CK weather!

I just tried using 'SovngardeClimate as my ... Climate. The climate changed to show the sovngarde 'portal' effect.

So I will try all seven climate settings available under ... Climate in the world space settings and see what happens. I really just want to do with the weather what I asked above though.

My issue was kind of the opposite...I was trying to replicate part of the seashore near Northwatch, but when I tried to view it I saw rolling hills and no water.

Weather in Skyrim is assigned by regions. Make your climate, then assign to that climate like say, two weathers. A light snow, and a dense blizzard. Then make a region and under the weather tab select your climate. Or you may even be able to set up the weather tab as though it were a climate... Then select your area in the region editor.

I haven't set up my own weather for my world yet, so their may be some unknown caveats, but this is how it's set up in Skyrim, so I assume we should be able to get it working just fine.

So did show/hide not work for the water? Sorry if not - I cannot think of what else that could be just now.

I tried the different climates and the best I could find was 'KarthSpireClimate' - think it called that - lol.

It is getting kind of late (or early) here so I just turned off CK and will be shutting down PC in a moment. I'll check back tomorrow and see if I can help more or get more help.

Thanks for the input so far. :)

Thanks AV - will give that a run through tomorrow - I did have a quick look at regions just before shutting down CK but I'm somewhat worn so it did not make sense to me! Besides that, my bed is screaming at me for want of occupation. LOL.

Hallo all,

It's ALIVE!

As soon as I was able today, I got on to the CK and set about the weather problem with a determination to get it right.

I started by following what AV posted and got as far as making a region. As I was making the region it came to me that maybe I would only need to set the climate as the island I am making is quite small and splitting it into regions may be a bit 'overkill'! So I deleted the new region and started to test the game.

After running the game many times and altering the time of day several times during each test run, I came to decide that I really do not need to do the regions at this time. (I will add regions if necessary though).

So, now I am armed with the information I was looking for! Weather seems to be working exactly how I wanted and the ice flows will be added soon (post #3).

Thank you all so much.

You guys may be interested in what the spoiler shows! I used spoiler as what I have written is kind of long.

Spoiler
What I did to get weather how I want it:
  • Object Window>WorldData>Climate
  • Right click in list of climates on 'KarthspireClimate' (I am using this as a template so to speak)
  • Select 'Duplicate'
  • Left Click on 'KarthspireClimateCOPY0000'
  • Press 'F2' and rename to your new name (I used 'Climate')
Alternatively:
  • Right click in list of climates
  • Select 'New'
  • When Climate window appears, type in ID (use a name associated with your project that is easy to recall)
  • Now, to save your new climate press 'OK' in the bottom right of Climate window
  • Reopen the new climate by double left clicking it
For new climates, you will probably need to edit more settings than I did with my duplicated and renamed climate - shown next:
  • Change nothing except the 'Weather Types' (unless you want too!)
  • If there are any 'Weather Types' listed, right click them and select delete
  • Select a weather type from the drop down list - under the 'Weather Types' list
  • Click 'Add' - under the 'Weather Types' list
  • Click 'OK' - I did not add anything from the list at this stage
  • Continue adding weather types as you see fit - I added a total of two - 'SkyrimOvercastSnow' and 'SkyrimStormSnow'
  • For each added weather type - double left click and alter the 'Chance' variable as you think is best (change number then press 'Enter' / 'Return' on keyboard)
  • Click 'OK' in Climate window
That is that! Your climate is now set up. You can change the climate to suit your needs - there are many sliders and other settings!

Now to apply the climate - remembering that I am not at this time using regions:
  • It would be wise to save your work at this point
  • Click Menu Bar>World>World Spaces
  • Click
  • From the climate list, select the new/duplicated new climate you made (DO NOT check the 'Use Climate Data' check box)
  • Click 'OK'
  • Save your work again
Now run Skyrim and use 'COC' to move to your mod area from console to test your mod. Note, you can load a test character you have made or simply use 'COC' from the console - but we all *cough* new that right?

Adding regions to have different weather in different parts of your world space will probably be needed at some point. For my tiny Island, this is not needed as yet!

Edited to tidy up somewhat.

Thanks again all.

That's cool you figured it out, I was just about to explain it. I thought you were adding to the top of the world though? Using your custom climate without a region will only work if your area is it's own worldSpace (I think you said it was parented to Tamriel)... which sounds like what you were looking for. But if you wanted to add to the world without having to LEAVE it (ie: just travel north until you reach it, as opposed to going through a door or other 'teleporter'), you'd have to make a region and assign your desired weather types to it (no need for a climate).

As for your ice floes.. I think you already found them as well, but in the objectWindow, Statics/Landscape/Ice/ is where you'll find some stuff you'll be wanting to use. (icebergs, floes, etc)

I would actually like to know how to add regions , my Island is like 1024x1024 pixels so 3.3 sq kms , but I have some regions , mostly Ice flats , Snowy mountains and tundra so I woudl need to make 3 regions , but is impossible to understand where to place them in a blind way where I can't see what features of the terrain are where , the whole map looks flat white pixels and I can't understand anything , is there a way to make the regions?

I will possibly need to look further into regions at a later date. For my current project, I'm just happy to have learned what I have so far.

About the top of the world thing:

My project is in its own world space but with Tamriel as the parent.

When I first thought of my project, I specifically wanted to go off map (Tamriel) and thought there was a nice open space at the top of the world map. I actually swam out as far as game would let me, clicked an iceberg while in console, used the item ID reference to work out map coords and made a map marker on the main world map to stake my claim as it where.

Later, I worked out some coordinate offsets and decided to offset my new world space way off the main map and that I would use the map marker as a 'this way too' pointer!

My island cannot be reached in game by walking or swimming - there is a sort of invisible barrier that stops your character and gives a 'you cannot go that way' message already built into the game. The island will be reached by boat when I get round to working one or two points on the world map (Tamriel) for a longboat to leave from.

I plan to have a longboat 'captain' somewhere in Tamriel with dialogue something like "Do you want to go to the island" and if the reply is "yes" then player is 'teleported' (thanks Charles Forte) to the island - it will be as if travelling by longboat and the longboat object(s) are already in my project at the island for this.

My project is a work in progress that I am using to help me better understand how to use the CK and I have been backing it up and documenting it as I go but did some basic 'project mangement' to setup a story and what sort of things I may need. I'm having a blast! To me, making this project is as entertaining as playing Skyrim!

Thanks again all.

I think these forums are amongst the best I have ever been on with very helpful folk and a generally pleasant atmosphere.
