Getting tired of Skyrim already ... discuss!

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 11:26 am

Dear Skyrim community,

as the title of my thread suggests, I am growing tired of this game. But I wouldn't post this here if I didn't hope my enthusiasm for this (actually really good) game couldn't be sparked again.

But let me give you a little information about the how and why.
I didn't actually play any single-player-rpgs since I grew tired of Diablo2. I always wanted to play an rpg in may favourite universe (warcraft), but didn't want to pay the monthly fee for WoW. After playing Sacred2 for a while (which was a quite well designed game, but didn't really satisfy me), I finally gave in to my cravings and downloaded the WoW trial-version. That was about two years ago and I heartly enjoyed the game. So I bought the full version and all the add-ons availiable at that time. Ambitious as I was I pretty soon became a raider and found a raid-guild. I liked my "companions" very much and despite the discouraging developments I stayed to play through yet another add-on (cataclysm). I put a lot of effort in becoming a better player, as did my guildies. We managed to raid hardcoe raids pre-nerf and had quite a bit of fun doing so but one day I decided that putting that much effort in a game is just not worth my time (and RL, obviously).
I found out about skyrim shortly before (through internet-memes ^^) and decided to give it a shot. I've never played any ES game before, but I liked Skyrim from the beginning. However, I didn't get to play it for very long and only achieved to get to level 6 before I stopped playing it.
Then, about two weeks ago my interest in this game was kindled yet again and since I've had nothing better to do, I played it a lot.
Now I have a lvl 39 dual-wielding, heavy armor wearing orc-warrior. I'm a Stormcloak, thane of Whiterun, Windhelm, Riften and Solitude (still on the "free the Reach" quests, but done with the Forsworn rebellion in Markarth) . I've got fully upgraded houses in those four cities. I'm one quest short of becoming head of the thieves-guild (no points invested in the "thief-tree" though), I'm a full memeber of the companions, slayed app. 30 dragons. My smithing skill is 100, heavy armour 85, one-handed 74, lock-picking 72 etc.

And there I am. Nothing in Skyrim seems to be an actual challenge anymore (except dealing with the glitches!).
I wear full legendary dragon armour (enchanted with "fortify one-handed/health/stamina/archery" - I also have a "blacksmith set" with fortify smithing, to upgrade my weapons/armour) and two legendary ebony war axes (shock/fire enchanted - black(great).
I also have the gauldur-amulet, which was at least a small challenge to get, but except dragons, every opponent is just a one-shot (run-power-attack with additional crit-dmg). And I never need more than two standing, dual-wielding power-attacks to slay one of those.
There's hardly any opponent that can actually harm me, but even when there is, I simply drink one or two potions and that's it.

But what really angers me, are the glitches. I found the orc-lady (Borgakh) in Mor Khazgar and as an orc, I thaught it to be very nice to have her as my follower. I also read some part of what she told me and learned, that she has not yet found anyone to mary and read about the possibility to marry an NPC in Skyrim.
I eqipped her with the best items i could forge and watched her, so she wouldn't die (as did two of my former followers, which I didn't really care about).
When I had the time I did the marriage-quest an married her. I heard, that you can decide which house to stay at, but there was no such option. She just left the building and disappeared. She was at no of my houses and not at her home in Mor Khazgar. I could also ask one of my housecarls to follow me, thus I believe she's gone for good.

The last "hard-save" I had was from before I cleared that dwemer place with Mercer at the end (too long and tedious to do again) and since I've left the Temple in Riften I've opended a few doors, so there also was no autosave from before the marriage to find out if it was only a temporary glitch.

So now I'm stuck in this game with nothing to do (pretty much to do actually, but nothing that spells fun), and my favourite NPC disappeared...

Stop playing when it's no longer fun is probably what I'd do.

I don't understand this unspoken obligation that Elder Scrolls games have to essentially be "Infinite fun". In this age of gaming, when you can fork out 60bucks for an 8 hour experience, having a game that plays so well for 40 hours is amazing, now multiply that by ten and Skyrim is there. When the game becomes boring, it becomes boring, the moment a developer creates a game with perpetual fun, is the moment gaming as an industry dies.

I agree, the game time Skyrim has given me is 10x more than most mortal games. The best thing is you can come back to it at any time.

Every charatcer has an expiration date, grinding the same character will be boring eventually. Set yourself goals to achieve & restrict what you do in the game.

Take a break, and come back to it in a few weeks.

Personally Skyrim bores me quickly, but I often return to play it for an hour or 2, before getting bored again.

Compared to Oblivion and Morrowind I really can't seem to play it for long. With those games I barely left my house for months.

If your feel like you've done evreything you want to do with that character make a new one!

Except this time change it up.

I find this game is most fun if you play it from more then one angle, your character is obviosly a dual wielding heavy warrior.

So instead make a stealthy Cloak and dagger type character who uses Alchemy and the Bow and arrow. Or maybe this time around you should make a Sword/shield type character who will side with the Empire.

Do you Rp? this is a RP game if you havn't Rped yet you should try it.

Is your character a Hero?, if so maybe this time you should make a villan and visa versa.

You could make a Mage.

You could try Mods if your on PC, you can download new Quests, Game mechanics, and even entire new towns to play in.

How about an assasins guild character?

Battle-Mages are popular.

What im saying is your not Bored with the Game, your bored with your Character so make a new one, except this time make an entirely diffrent one.

My past experience with Oblivion tells me to quit when it becomes boring. I quit and came back after 1 year or so and I enjoyed playing again with all dlc and a new character build. There's no point in stalling, this is a game and should be fun.

Dear Skyrim community...

I wear full legendary dragon armour (enchanted...) and two legendary ebony war axes (shock/fire enchanted - black(great)..

[I got married, but now she's gone - glitch?]...

WWYD?

So, you walk around in the best armor with some of the best weapons and you are wondering why you feel like a god?? Seriously?

Developers make the game hard enough to play so you start out getting one hit killed at lower levels and when you completely upgrade your character you then have the power to one hit kill everything. That's just how it works. But you want to complain as if it's too easy?? Well, sir, you ruined the game for yourself by playing it that way. If you want the game to be more difficult then there are plenty of ways to make the game more difficult. I like to use under powered weapons with my awesome armor. That way I can take a beating but I never one hit kill anything. Also, do you play on the hardest difficulty setting?

As for you wife, I'm sorry. That does sound very frustrating. But since you don't save as often as you could, it's really again your own fault. If you want to live with the consequences then, by all means, don't save a whole bunch. But if you want to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen then it's up to you to save more often. And autosave is a trap, you should operate with 5 to 10 manual saves, always saving over the oldest. And you should pay attention to the things you care about so that they don't go disappearing and you don't notice it for 2 hours then you're screwed because you lost that save.

Ultimately, OP, if you are bored with the game then just stop playing it. You are the one who is bored so the burden of finding fun in the game falls to you. It's up to you to make the game fun. The developers designed the game they wanted. And if you don't want to play it then don't play it. But if you want to find other ways to make it fun then there are all sorts of things you can do. But I would guess that if you are bored by the way you play then none of my suggestions would help you.

As others have said if you truly find the game boring then move on to a different game. However if you really want to carry on I suggest that you roleplay. http://j-u-i-c-e.hubpages.com/hub/roleplaying-skyrim - Take a look at that guide created by another member on these forums. Also on your next playthrough don't grind the crafting skills to get the best gear, I see you have played WoW, this is a single player game so there is no reason why you need the best gear, try restricting yourself to lower class weapons and armour and you will find more of a challenge again.

What about your other skills?

Sounds to me like you fall into the same trap as a lot of people. You do everything with one character. You should specialise and set yourself boundaries.

Hmm, I am not certain how to reply to this. It is more a statement than a question and just about nothing I say will change it. However, I can try to list up a few things that make the game fun for me.

The first and most important thing in my opinion is to limit the character. I don't go for the best armor or the best weeapons, I don't want the most powerful enchantments and I limit myself to one crafting skill per character. I go for the armor and weapons that I think fits my character.
I also limit what quests and factions I do. I don't serve the darker daedric princes on a Crusader/Paladin-themed character, nor do I join the Dark Brotherhood or the Thieves Guild.
I try to have a planned set of skills I want to use. For a Crusader/Paladin I don't train in any skills not related to the build(sneal, pickpocket, conuration etc.) and the same goes for an assassin build, or a mage build.

I often simply walk from town to town and see where the adventure takes me, often stumbling upon quests in dungeons or shacks and houses in the wild. I stopp to read books, to listen to conversations among the NPCs(though it is not a lot of that this time around) and enjoy the different views.

I add certain traits to the character, mostly how he would act and how he ould react in certain situations. Example: I can have a good guy, but he may be more complex than that. He may be willing to kill someone who betrays him even if it would be the wrong ting to do(if it leads to an innocents death etc.).

Sometims I bring a follower and it is often fun. At higher levels the followers can easily die if you are not careful(granted some of the followers are very strong on their own and can pretty much take care of themselves) and it adds to the challenge.

The last thing I do is that I roll vastly different characters.

These are mall things I do to make the games(I do this for Oblivion and Morrowind too) more enjoyable. However, if you are tired of the game it might not be enough to bring you back to it.

It's what happens when you have a game, that's equal to an ocean that is only a few inches deep.

I agree. Why do some people expect such unreasonable things?

I've been playing over 160 hours so far (with multiple characters) and I'm still not bored. I totally got my money's worth with Skyrim and am not disappointed at all.

On the other hand, I'm playing on PC so perhaps mods have extended the life of Skyrim for me.

I'm the opposite - I've played hundreds of hours and still haven't explored even half of the land. I'm always finding new things to do, explore and enjoy. When you throw roleplaying into the mix, you can let hundreds of hours slip away and still find yourself wanting to play more!

I can see your problem straight away. You're walking around in legendary dragonbone armor, wielding extremely powerful weapons and enchanted to further increase damage. You've svcked the challenge out of the game for yourself.

I'd suggest you start a new character. Pick a class and stick to it - for example, I'm playing a mage. Play as your character - make decisions that your character would make (for example, a law-abiding warrior wouldn't join the Dark Brotherhood or College of Winterhold) and eat and sleep every night. Don't stand there making hundreds of iron daggers and then enchant them until you've got 100 in both skills. Instead, make and improve armor as you need, and your skills will level at a realistic pace.

Take the game slowly, admire the sights, the sounds, the NPCs and enjoy the quests. Get to know the people and the cities. Explore dungeons, taking time to notice the details and read the journals you find. And, again, don't power-level. That's your recipe to hundreds of hours of entertainment! :)

I grew tired in uncharted after 15 hours. And it cost more than Skyrim, which I'm still playing after around 300 hours. I still haven't explored everything in Skyrim.

I think you have approached this as an MMO. You have created one character and completed all the quests. Its an RPG so you should have approached it as such. Is your character evil, do they steal or murder, do they use magic are they a fan of the Daedra?

The game is what you make it. I've had at least a dozen characters, each is role played and approaches the game ib different ways. I find this prevents boredom. Clocked up hundreds of hours and I've still to complete the main or civil war quest lines.

This threads make me stop and think: what i'm doin' here ?

Its normal goin' bored of a game after hundreds of hours of playing, even of a Tes..and it depends from your approach to the game of course.

However, for the glitches and bugs doin' multiple saves before start any important quest/entering a dungeon and search here and on the net for possible solutions for your specific problems/platform
